The weapons are silent, the ceasefire after the 11 days of the fourth war between Israel and Hamas stands, the negotiations between the parties go on but the Israeli army continues its actions repressive, in the silence of the international community.
At dawn on 9 June, soldiers raided the headquarters of Ramallah of the Committees for Work on Health (Hwc). They broke down the front door and confiscated computers and electronic files. After a few hours, a military court ordered the closure of the facility for six months.
The Israeli authorities believe that the body is a front for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a political party which – as in the Palestinian tradition – has its own armed wing. The pro-government narrative continues to denounce that “funds from the United Nations and the World Health Organization are being allocated to Ong who support terrorism “.
It had happened before. The Jerusalem office it had been closed in 2015 and in October 2019 and also three months ago, three employees of the Ramallah office were arrested. But now, in the pandemic period and during the vaccination campaign, this new episode is particularly serious.
In recent years, the Hwc has become the main Palestinian health organization, running numerous hospitals, organizing training courses for young people and providing medical care to the poorest communities and women. Most importantly, for the past 15 months the HWC has directed the policies of contrast to the spread of the pandemic from Covid-19, issuing directives, guaranteeing essential treatments to positive patients and organizing mobile clinics to reach the most distant villages.
All this now runs the risk of stopping. Or maybe it has already stopped.
