The first wife married her when she was 17 years old. Then all the others came, “sometimes even ten in one year alone”. Ziona Chana, 76, considered the progenitor of one of the largest families in the world, died yesterday in India, in the state of Mizoram. Leader of Chana Pawl, a Christian-inspired religious sect that practices polygamy, Chana bequeathed to his village of Baktawng Tlangnuam, in the north east of the country, a large clan of over 160 people, with 39 wives, 89 children and 36 grandchildren.
His disappearance was announced by the governor of Mizoram, Zoramthanga, who offered his condolences on Twitter. According to local media, Chana, despite the care of the immense family, suffered from diabetes and hypertension. And when he was rushed to hospital on Sunday evening, there was nothing he could do.

It is difficult to say if Chana’s family is really the largest in the world, there is not even clarity on the exact number of wives, children and grandchildren. But record or not, its history has attracted, over the years, tourists and onlookers from all over the world. “House of the new generation”, as the clan’s house is called, a four-storey building with 100 rooms and a number of terraces. Confined to a real dormitory, the wives take turns cooking while the daughters clean the house and do the laundry. The males, on the other hand, work in the fields and take care of the cattle.
Not easy to feed so many mouths for Chana. Some local media went so far as to write that his family members consume up to 59 kilos of rice per day. And a bit of concern now snakes in the bosom of the family that has lived up to now thanks to the donations of the followers of the sect. It was founded by Chana’s grandfather back in 1942. Today it has about two thousand followers, all from the surrounding villages. It allows polygamy. But only to men. “I have so many people to take care of and I consider myself a lucky man. I have been married 39 times, but I would like to do it again “, Chana had said before he died. But he didn’t have time to get to number 40.
