A Muslim family was hit last night by a vehicle on the run in London, Canada: 4 dead. Canadian police believe it was “an intentional act”. “The victims of this horrific attack were targeted for their Islamic faith,” said police chief Steve Williams.
Three adults died in the attack – a man and a woman aged 46 and 44, evidently the parents, and a 74-year-old woman, the grandmother – and a 15-year-old girl, while a 9-year-old boy is hospitalized with severe wounds. Police arrested the perpetrator, a 20-year-old, who was charged with the four murders and one attempted murder. But the police – we read on the CBC website – do not rule out that he is also indicted for terrorism.
The young man was driving a pickup truck and according to the police he acted with premeditation. It was “a premeditated and planned act, motivated by hatred”, said the police chief of the Ontario town, adding that it is not yet known whether the arrested person belongs to some extremist group and that the young man has not criminal record. The 20-year-old was arrested not far from the crime scene and officers noticed that he was wearing a vest that looked like armored.
“These innocent human beings were killed simply because they were Muslims,” said Nawaz Tahir, a representative of the Islamic community in London. “We will remain strong against hatred – he added – strong against Islamophobia, against terrorism, with faith, love and the search for justice”.
