The United States is not releasing pressure on China to hunt for the origins of the pandemic and the hypothesis of a virus escape from the Wuhan infectious laboratory remains on the table. So much so that the virologist Anthony Fauci would have asked the Beijing authorities for some medical records, those of the three researchers and of the other six people who are suspected of having contacted Covid 19 as early as November 2019, a month before the first official infections.
This was reported by the Financial Times, although no confirmation has been received from Washington for now. “I would like to see the medical records of the people who got sick in 2019. Did they really get sick and, if so, what did they get sick of?”, Fauci said, referring to the nine-person team of the Wuhan lab who already had in 2012 carried out an inspection in a cave inhabited by bats and considered an outbreak of the new coronavirus.
The suspicion is that during the studies and laboratory analyzes an escape to the outside of the virus may have occurred. An accident rather than a deliberate action, Fauci repeated in recent days, but an accident always denied by the Chinese authorities, who brand the thesis as “a conspiracy theory”. The spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Wenbin, dismissed the request of the health consultant of the American President Joe Biden as follows: “The Wuhan Institute of Virology released a statement on March 23 stating that as of December 30, 2019 the laboratory he had not been exposed to the new coronavirus. We hope – adds the spokesman – that the United States will adopt a scientific and cooperative attitude like that of China, inviting WHO experts to carry out research on the traceability of the virus “.
Same reaction from Fauci’s counterpart, the infectious disease specialist Shi Zhengli. The thesis of Beijing therefore remains that of the contagion that occurred directly with the transmission of the virus from animals and not necessarily in China, where Covid 19 could have arrived from the outside, perhaps through imported frozen food. But for Fauci in those medical records of the nine people who fell ill in 2019, three of whom died, there could be “fundamental clues” to trace the origin of the pandemic. That is why his appeal to the Chinese authorities and colleagues is to cooperate as much as possible in the search for the truth. Meanwhile, the White House has taken the field in defense of the director of the Infectious Disease Institute increasingly targeted by criticism from detractors, especially after the publication of many of his emails exchanged during over a year of fighting the virus.
“The president and the administration believe that Dr. Fauci has played an incredible role in keeping the pandemic under control,” said spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki, describing the virologist of Italian origin as a “fundamental resource” for the country.
