For the first time in 12 years Israel has a government without the premier Benjamin Netanyahu. With a phone call half an hour after his mandate expires, the centrist leader Yair Lapid (pictured right) the president warned in extremis Reuven Rivlin – who was at the stage – of having managed to form the ruling coalition. “The new government – he said Lapid – will do everything possible to unite all the components of the Israeli company. Our commitment is to put ourselves at the service of all citizens of Israel, including those who do not support this government ”. With a reference to the strong attacks coming from right nationalist, Lapid assured: “We are committed to respecting those who oppose us”. And he informed Rivlin which intends to submit the new government to the approval of the Knesset as soon as possible.
At the end of a hectic day that has seen everything in danger several times, Lapid finally, it has welded the alliance that will see the government partner Naftali Bennett (pictured left), ‘Yamina’, prime minister for the first two years and then he will take the lead in the second part of the legislature. An executive who records the first time of a Arab party to the government: the moderate Islamist one of Window driven by Mansour Abbas. To overcome all the rocks that gradually stood in the way of the result, it took a series of interminable river meetings in the hotel Kfar Maccabiah. At the end the center parties – ‘There is a future’ and ‘Blue White’ (Benny Gantz) – on the right – ‘Yamina’ (Naftali Bennett), ‘New hope’ (Gideon Saar), ‘Israel Casa Nostra’ (Avigdor Lieberman) – left – Labor e Meretz – and Raam, signed the document which allowed a Lapid to give the announcement to Rivlin.
The last obstacles were those of Abbas and the disagreement between Labor e Yamina. Window he wanted assurances on building interventions on the Arab side of society and the recognition municipal for some Bedouin localities of the Negev. Labor e Yamina they both wanted the presidency of the delicate Commission who appoints i magistrates: in the end, the criterion of rotation. He will be president for two years Ayalet Shaked, number two of Yamina and the other two Merav Michaeli leader of the Labor. Now the ball passes to the president of the Knesset Yariv Levin which will have to indicate the date on which the Chamber will have to vote for confidence in the new government. At least 61 seats out of 120 are needed. A delicate step that could also reserve surprises you don’t like it, since there are singles deputies of the parties of the coalition – especially from Yamina – who they said they were in disagreement.
The launch of the new government took place at the end of a day that registered the election of Isaac Herzog new president of Israel. At the first vote, the Knesset he designated it by voting for it with 87 preferences. The current president ofJewish Agency – scion of the aristocracy ashkenazita Zionist who founded Israel – beat the challenger Miriam Peretz, an outsider from a diametrically opposite world, the Sephardic one of the immigrants from the Arab countries, but at the same time the other side of the country.
Herzog – for friends Candle – crowned his long rise to power: he is the son of Chaim Herzog, who before him was president, the sixth, of Israel. Surprisingly defeated by Netanyahu in the 2015 political elections: “I intend to be the president of everyone, to listen to all voices – he said in the acceptance speech of the appointment after receiving the congratulations of the premier himself – in an attempt to trace the lines of convergence both within our society and with our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora“. “The challenges – he continued – are many and must be taken with great consideration. It is essential to heal the bloody wounds that have opened up in our society in recent times. We must also defend Israel’s international position and its good name among the peoples. We also have to fight anti-Semitism and the hatred of Israel. We need to protect the pillars of ours democracy“.
