The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) revises the risk of the Omicron variant upwards from “high” to “very high” and predicts that it will account for more than half of the infections expected in Europe in the coming months.

The ECDC stops the momentary situation with 352 cases of Omicron ascertained in 27 countries around the world, 70 cases in 13 European countries. He also adds that there is a “high probability” that Omicron will reduce the protection of those recovered and vaccinated.

Preliminary data from South Africa on the Omicron variant “suggests it may have a substantial growth advantage over the Delta, and if so, mathematical models indicate that Omicron is expected to cause more than half of all SARS-CoV-2 infections in the Delta. EU / EEA within the next few months “.

Meanwhile, the updated ECDC map says that only Italy and Spain, in the EU,
they have areas of yellow color, therefore still not at high risk of contagion. The rest of the Union is red or dark red. As for Italy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Umbria, Puglia, Basilicata, Sicily and Sardinia are yellow. The remaining Regions are red, none in dark red. In Spain only one region retains the yellow color: Extremadura. According to the ECDC, the highest incidence of infections is concentrated in Germany, Benelux, Ireland, Greece and Eastern Europe.
