A charter flight has departed from Cape Town which will bring home the two rugby blues Jacopo Trulla and Andrea Zambonin from Vicenza, and all the companions of the Zebre and other European rugby teams in South Africa. This was announced by Michele Dalai, president of the federal franchise based in Parma. The flight departed at noon and will land in Dublin tonight around 10pm.

Jacopo Trulla and Andrea Zambonin spent the days in the hotel, in Cape Town, facing each other in the most classic board games; blocked in South Africa, due to the South African variant of Covid-19. They rested, waiting for the good news that announced their return to Italy, home, and that of their companions. They should have taken the field yesterday, against the DHL Stormers, and on Saturday 4 December at the Cell C Sharks, matches valid for the United Rugby Championship, the championship in which South African, Welsh, Irish and Scottish teams also participate. The matches, on the other hand, were postponed on Friday and the official communication arrived from the organizers.

The Zebras are part of the United Rugby Championship, a championship in which Italian teams (in addition to the Zebras, Benetton Treviso) and representatives of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and South Africa participate. The Zebras, together with the Irish Munster and the Welsh Scarlets and Cardiff, were in these days in South Africa where they were supposed to play two league games, which were however canceled by the URC due to the Covid situation in the country.

Meanwhile, infections are flying in South Africa, even if the ministry of health – reporting over 3,200 new cases in the last 24 hours – does not provide information on how many of these are related to Omicron. In the country, reads a Tweet from the South African health authority, the positivity rate has risen to 9.2% with “3,220 new cases of Covid” concentrated in Guateng, the region where Johannesburg and Pretoria are located, which records 82 % of total new infections. Yesterday the data pointed to 2,880 new cases in one day and 2,465 the day before yesterday.
