The Niger government said at least 69 people were killed on Tuesday in an attack in a town in the Tillaberi region, bordering Mali and Burkina Faso. It is a historically very unstable area, like the whole Sahel region (the strip of territories located just south of the Sahara desert): in the last year alone, about 500 people have been killed in similar attacks in this area.

A group of armed men attacked a convoy of people led by a local mayor who was killed in the attack. There are currently no claims, but the armed groups operating in this territory are often linked to terrorist organizations such as al Qaeda and the Islamic State.
