France: towards possible increase in baguette – Ultima Ora

(ANSA) – PARIS, OCTOBER 25 – The price of the baguette, the famous and highly imitated loaf of bread, symbol of France, could increase in many bakeries in France. Faced with a generalized rise in costs, the bakers across the Alps – the so-called ‘boulangers’ – could in fact be induced to pass on part of it to customers.

“The cost of wheat, flour, energy, plus wages, prices linked to packaging, is red alert”, warns the president of the Confédération nationale de la boulangerie-pâtisserie française (CNBPF), Dominique Anract, on radio France Info. . For him, an increase in the baguette is to be expected in the coming weeks or even the next few days. Reason? The increase in the cost of wheat, which has risen by 30% since the beginning of the year due to the poor harvest in Russia due to drought and floods that has caused the supply to collapse. But also the rise in energy prices. In France, the standard baguette currently costs around 90 cents. However, the president of the CNBF is keen to remember that the cost of this staple food, so important that it has been requested to be recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, has grown by “only 23 cents in 20 years”.
