Okay, the protest of the minority of the unvaccinated has a lot of media coverage. And the vaccinated? In general silence they travel towards the goal of 90% of the population over 12 years old, or those who can receive the injection. It is useless to underline the not only symbolic importance of “90% share” which is not equivalent to herd immunity but is very similar to it. So much so that half-mouthed rumors – but nothing more – of a possible easing of anti Covid prevention measures if this threshold were to be exceeded.
Possible? Meanwhile, it must be said that to reach 90% of vaccinated it is necessary that at least another 2.5 million Italians accept the administration. Doing the math on the tip of the nose it turns out that yesterday the Italians vaccinated with at least one dose were 46.1 million, equal to 85.4% of the 54 million vaccinated. And since with the rhythms of these days (70/75 thousand first doses which however fall on Saturdays and Sundays) the injections increase on average by 350,000 per week, it is easy to calculate that to cut the ribbon of 90% of vaccinated people it will take at least 7/8 weeks. In short, the goal is within reach but not before December, a little before Christmas.
A winter virus
Is it therefore conceivable, once you have reached such a high number of vaccinations, to let your guard down, perhaps to the point of spending a Christmas without the obligation of a Green Pass? The response of the experts is clear: no. “We will be able to think about the elimination of the Certificate when the epidemic is definitively controlled – explains Fabio Ciciliano,” historical “member of the Technical Scientific Committee – Thanks to tools such as the Green pass and the quota of presences indoors and masks, we go towards normality but we are not there yet ».
But when the vaccinated are at 90%, will anything change? “At a medical level, coronaviruses such as Sars-Cov2 are airborne and have a higher incidence during the cold months – Ciciliano replies – To sum up, I think we need to wait until the end of winter”. «In any case – adds the expert – it is worth remembering that last year we spent a Christmas and a New Year with strong restrictions between red and orange areas. This year, however, mass vaccinations allow us to “face” the upcoming holidays in a very different way. However, I would remain cautious. The legislation on the Green pass is extended until December 31st but the real goal is not the one set by a date but by the actual end of the epidemic ».
Meanwhile, the need to present the Green Pass at work is causing the use of tampons to explode. “Yesterday 653 thousand swabs were performed by Italian pharmacies, almost double the average of 300 thousand recorded on October 13,” announced Andrea Mandelli, president of the Federation of Pharmacists’ Orders. Mandelli said that the administration of vaccines in pharmacies is also seeing a sharp increase.
