The storms caused widespread flooding across central Germany overnight between Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 July, and authorities have warned more rains are on the way. In Hagen, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, the fire brigade rescued several people whose vehicles were stuck in a flooded underpass. The floods also caused landslides, with rivers of mud pouring onto the roads. The Hof district, near the border with the Czech Republic, issued a state of calamity after the basements of the houses were filled with water, the trees were uprooted and some areas were without electricity all night . Meteorologists have predicted further “extreme storms” in western and central parts of Germany for the next few hours.
