Protests in Ukraine after the female soldiers were paraded in uniform and high-heeled shoes in view of the parade on 24 August for the 30th anniversary of independence. The photographs of the parade rehearsals, released on Friday by the defense ministry, have raised controversy and criticism. “It’s hard to imagine a more idiotic and harmful idea,” said Inna Sovsun, a deputy from the Golos Party for which female soldiers, “like male soldiers, put their lives at risk, so they don’t deserve to be mocked” .
Olena Kondratyuk, vice president of the Verkhovna Rada, asked for a public apology from the government for having “humiliated” women, recalling that 13,500 women fought at the front against separatists in the east. Heeled shoes were exhibited in Parliament as a sign of protest.
