She was saved thanks to an article on the web, Alana Severs, a 36-year-old nurse from Portsmouth, UK. The woman turned to a specialist after reading on the internet that the stain on the nail – which she considered nothing serious – was actually a tumor. In fact, from the biopsy prescribed by his family doctor, bad news emerged: a skin melanoma that presented itself with a line on the nail. Immediately after surgery, surgeons at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth removed Alana’s entire nail plus 5 mm of cancerous tissue.
Now the woman no longer has her nail but she is grateful that she will be able to continue living. The 36-year-old neglected the spot for about 3 years and according to doctors she was very lucky not to have had more serious consequences. “What I thought it was a frivolous pastime, read an article online at 11pm, while in bed, in the end it saved my life“, she commented now more relieved.
The article in question was published in 2017 in the journal Cosmopolitan: “When I read it I thought: ‘Absolutely not. It can’t be like that for me too.’ I was terrified to the idea of having cancer and I couldn’t believe I had ignored it for so long. “And again, on the words the doctors told her:” They said it was great that it didn’t grow in my hands. He had grown outward, so noit hadn’t even gotten to my blood yet. I could have gone another three years without thinking about it and it could have spread and become deadly, “is his bitter outburst.
