Xiaomi has just patented a phone that sports a curved display with a fingerprint scanner mounted on the side frame.
Xiaomi: what does the patent describe?
Apparently the Chinese technology giant is working on a new device that sports a unique design. A new patent has revealed that the device in question features a side panel-mounted fingerprint scanner that is housed within a curved display.
According to a report by 91Mobiles, Xiaomi has filed this design with the United States patent application publication. This patent was filed on June 3, 2021 and show a smartphone with a curved edge-to-edge display. In other words, the terminal could be a high-quality flagship model. One of its most notable features includes a side fingerprint scanner which is housed on the right side where the screen appears to be curved.
The fingerprint sensor is housed under the curved panel instead of being part of a separate housing within the frame. This design is similar to that of the Realme X3 SuperZoom and Mi 10i smartphones. While most curved gadgets sport an AMOLED screen, Xiaomi aims to introduce a curved IPS LCD display with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. Unfortunately, the patent sketches reveal no other design elements related to this phone.
Also, as the device is still only a patent, it’s unclear whether the smartphone maker is actually working on such a product or just covering all the bases. However, the inclusion of the curved IPS LCD display could mean a major change for budget and mid-range terminals that do not offer an integrated fingerprint in the display.
