From version to version of Windows, Microsoft has removed some famous operating system features including the startup sound. When a new Windows 10 or Windows 8 device turns on, it no longer emits the familiar and classic startup sound we’ve heard for years. But, if you are nostalgic, is there a way to enable startup sound.
Jensen Harris, who served as a director of the Windows User Experience (WUE) team, recently explained because the company has decided to turn off the startup sound on Windows 8 and Windows 10 by default. The reason is very simple and banal, and perhaps it is the same that annoyed those who had to suffer that sound every time it was switched on: it could disturb. Over the years, Windows devices have become increasingly mobility-oriented, and the startup sound could now interrupt a meeting or class.
As Windows Latest explains, it was the result of a natural transition into a new world where PCs are increasingly similar to mobile devices: ready to use and usable anywhere. The company, working on 2-in-1s, laptops and other portable devices, realized that the startup sound played on each reboot could be annoying and embarrassing.
“One of the things we did was look at how and where people used their PCs”, has explained Harris. “Most of the PCs sold were laptops or netbooks, and that percentage was increasing every year.”
However Microsoft did not completely remove the option and it was disabled by default only on new installations, so you can enable the startup sound by following these steps:
- Go to Settings> Personalization
- Click on Sounds and open the Sounds tab
- Enable the “Play Windows startup sound” option
- Click on “Apply” and then click on “OK”.
By following these steps, Windows will play a sound every time the PC is started or restarted – those nostalgic for the classic boot tone can be happy again. Perhaps, if you are one of them, only start your computer if you are alone, because we assure you that the Windows startup sound is not really appreciated by everyone.
