Last week we saw the very first online references of the evolution of Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, the top-of-the-range mobile platform from the American manufacturer. The new processor “Pro”, which has not yet been officially announced, appeared in the Geekbench database, while in the past few hours the next variant of 888 – probably the SoC that will be announced at the end of the year and presented on the first devices at the beginning of 2022, has been described in a tweet from Evan Blass, aka @evleaks.
The well-known leaker in this case shared a fairly complete technical data sheet of the new SoC, also indicating that it has the internal code SM8450 and which product on a 4-nm process. Inside there is also the modem-RF Snapdragon X65, which enables 5G connectivity at maximum download speeds of 10Gbps (Snapdragon 888’s Snapdragon X60 stops at 7.5Gbps). The processor also known internally as Waipio and should have several tricks up its sleeve.
In the list of features published by Evan Blass we find an Adreno 730 GPU, a Spectra 680 ISP, mmWave band support for the 5G modem, Qualcomm Aqsticv WCD9380 / WCD9385 audio codec), the Secure Processing Unit 260, support for the quad-channel RAM package -on-package LPDDR5 and, perhaps among the most important feature, the presence of a CPU with Kryo 780 core designed on the new ARMv9 architecture (in the link you will find an in-depth analysis).
In the list we can therefore see several natural evolutions: the Adreno 730 will replace the current Adreno 660 GPU of Snapdragon 888, as well as the ISP Spectra 680 should introduce new possibilities in the photographic field. The FastConnect 6900 chip, also developed by Qualcomm, should also guarantee Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. It is currently difficult to make predictions on the reliability of the new information leaked, however we remember that Blass is one of the most reliable leakers ever.
It Snapdragon 888 was made official in December 2020 and is currently the most powerful SoC in Qualcomm’s range. It is foreseeable that its successor will also be unveiled at that time of the year, to then be implemented on the first devices at the beginning of 2022. In recent weeks, however, the Pro variant of Snapdragon 888 appeared online, which should represent an overclock of the current top. of range and that we could see on the first smartphones in the second half of 2021.
