Assemble that Passes you is a weekly column that collects the main news related to PC gaming hardware and offers three configurations, divided by price ranges, designed for those who want to assemble or update their machine. As usual, suggestions are welcome and corrections welcome, as long as the tones are adequate. Another tip is to read the paragraphs presenting the configurations before you do battle in the comments.
The rainy weekend veiled the enthusiasm for the reopening of venues in most of the regions, but a hint of optimism could still ignite in the hearts of those who cannot find a video card due to the combination of extremely high demand, lines of saturated production and stellar prices. It seems in fact that AMD is finally ready to implement strategies for increase production he talked about long ago. Among other things, there is talk of official statements, released during the presentation of the quarterly financial statements that saw the company led by Lisa Su celebrate a jump in turnover of 93% compared to the same period last year. Enough to generate a record net profit of $ 555 million which equates to a 243% increase over the first quarter of 2021.
Staggering numbers that the company expects to be able to raise further thanks to the increase in the availability of GPUs. And that’s something that will hopefully apply to the entire RX 6000 lineup and next-generation consoles, equipped with Radeon graphics chips. It is not necessarily the case, however. On the other hand, AMD is about to launch the solutions Radeon RX 6000M for portable devices and should soon launch the Radeon RX 6500 and 6600 as well. Therefore the increase in sales promised by the company could depend on the arrival of these new products and not on the increase in the availability of higher-end GPUs. But the presence on the market of a good amount of RX 6500 e 6600 it could at least ease the pressure on the higher and older generation models, while still leading to improvements in the availability and price of all Radeon cards. A prospect that we hope will happen quickly, while not hoping for miracles. For everything to be resolved, in fact, it will take several months, necessary for an overall adjustment of the production chain starting from the expansion plans of the main foundries to arrive at insulating components or secondary but still essential elements.
A help to the market, however, could also give it a block to the hash rate more effective than that seen on the RTX 3060. It should bring it to the field, we have already said that GeForce RTX 3080 Ti which according to very reliable rumors should officially appear on May 18. There is also talk of 12 GB of memory and, weighing the CUDA cores, of in-game performance probably not too dissimilar to the RTX 3090 which will in all likelihood become an option designed almost exclusively for professionals who need VRAM in quantity. However, we do not know where the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti that like the RTX 3080 We already take you as an officer thanks to very robust rumors and clues. These, however, talking about two possible variants for a card that may not distance itself too much from the RTX 3070 so as not to undermine too much the RTX 3080 with an alleged 16 GB model that could wink at creators and graphics professionals. However, it could generate confusion in a segment already plagued by a shortage of cards and prices so paradoxical that sometimes RTX 3090s are available at prices similar to those at which the RTX 3080s are found.
We do not expect big problems with future CPUs, at least in the case of those Alder Lake which should be produced directly in Intel foundries. However, we don’t know what to expect in terms of potential. Some rumors that popped up a couple of months ago mentioned a 20% increase in terms of IPC, DDR5 and PCIe 5, but there could be surprises since we are talking about an architecture designed to combine up to two series of 8 of two types of cores. different. Up to 16 then, but half presumably designed to consume less while still helping others in parallel computing and half to go to very high frequencies for gaming and applications that are susceptible to the clock. Despite the doubts, however, it seems that the path chosen by Intel may be the right one to renew the CPU segment. In fact, it is likely that AMD is also ready to follow it, albeit with slower timing.
We’ve already talked about the possibility that AMD has decided to stem Alder Lake by using Zen 3 processors and postponing PCIe 5 and DDR5 to 2022. But we are talking about a few months of difference at a time when the Ryzen name has great momentum. On the contrary, for the debut of AMD in the field of hybrid architectures there is talk of a gap in favor of Intel of 3 years, with the CPUs Ryzen 8000 Strix Point expected for 2024. But it is not said that Zen 4 is an architecture without tricks up its sleeve and it is good to consider the fact that the debut with Zen 5 should allow AMD, as long as the rumors are true, to use transistors a 3 nanometers, with all the advantages of the case. Among other things, in the rumors there is also talk of integrated GPU, as we already know probably destined to appear on all Ryzen from the 7000 series, and of a whole new cache, obviously designed to allow the different types of cores to communicate without delays.
The budget configuration is the one oriented to saving but it is not certain that there is no room for the upgrade where interesting prospects arise. The proposals in this range include solutions designed for low-tech games and 1080p-oriented builds.
Despite another small price increase, the Core i5-10400F remains the pivot of the low-end. On the other hand, it is cheaper than the 11400F, it is more available than its AMD counterparts, it is equipped with Hyperthreading unlike the similar model of the previous series and strong in game performance.
The GeForce GT 1030 is still the only option with a not too inflated price and therefore remains in the field. Among other things, this week thanks to a price drop of 20 euros that increases its appeal, although it is still overpriced compared to a few months ago.
In the gaming segment there are usually those components that allow you to face the game on the PC without fear and to hold on for some time. The frame rate showdown is just around the corner but, with a good base, it’s always possible to sell the old GPU before it devalues too much so you can buy a new one just in time to take on the next hardware-smashing blockbuster.
The Core i5-11600FK core is not yet available at the minimum price, but it is still priced around five euros lower than last week and for this it still wins a place in the mid-range. Sure, the 10600K has a significantly lower price and good gaming performance, but it lacks PCIe 4.0 and falls short in raw power.
The GeForce RTX 3060, designed for uncompromising 1080p, remains our placeholder for a configuration capable of guaranteeing even some satisfaction in 1440p. Of course, the prices lead us to advise against it, even if it is available at prices significantly lower than the maximum ones. But they are still much higher than recommended.
