Rome – From tonight the protagonist of the skies will be her, the Moon. In fact, theInternational Observe the Moon Night, the global initiative organized by NASA and dedicated to the discovery and observation of our natural satellite, scheduled as early as tonight and then throughout Saturday 16 October.
From the United States to Canada, from South America to Arabia to Europe, there are over 1,940 events organized all over the world, of which about a hundred in Italy. It is a special day on October 16, not only because the Moon will be in its first quarter, but because the launch of Nasa’s Lucy mission is also planned, which will have the task of studying Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids to better understand the origins of the Solar system. As usual, the Night of the Moon will be an opportunity to propose observations to the telescope and investigate issues such as its formation, past and planned space missions, mythology, poetry, music and different artistic expressions inspired by our natural satellite. In Italy there are many initiatives organized by the Italian Amateur Astronomers Union (Uai), which is one of the official partners of the event. The special event organized for October 16 at the Monte Viseggi Astronomical Observatory in La Spezia with the theme game ‘Moon’ and observations of the stars, whose images, taken live by the telescopes, will be projected on a monitor, should be noted. Telescopes aimed at our satellite also at the Astronomical Observatory of Punta Falcone di Piombino on the night of October 15, while the Association of Ravennate Astrofili Rheyta (Arar) proposes the event ‘La Luna dantesca’ at the Classense library in Ravenna. Also on the night of October 16, the Moon will be discovered at the Capodimonte Astronomical Observatory in Naples, thanks to the event organized by the Neapolitan Amateur Astronomers Union with presentations and observations at the telescope.
The Virtual Telescope Project, on the other hand, of which the astrophysicist Gianluca Masi is the scientific director, will offer starting from 5.30 pm tomorrow, the possibility of observing the Moon above the magnificent horizon of Rome. In the United States, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center organizes a virtual observation party accompanied by social media activities, while a live streaming of the Moon organized by the British Space Agency is scheduled from the island of Cyprus.
