Fairphone 4: the modular and ethical smartphone becomes premium

Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise engaged in the realization of fair trade smartphones, easier to repair and made with materials obtained from an ethical and controlled supply chain, presented the Fairphone 4.

Based on a modular project (no part of the Fairphone 4 is glued, so it is more repairable with a score of 9.3 out of 10 in the French Repairability Index), but with renewed hardware and design, this smartphone is accompanied by 5 year guarantee and support until the end of 2025, although the goal would be to extend it until 2027.

Ambitious sure, but not impossible if we think that the Fairphone 2 received Android 9 earlier this year (it came out with Android 5). On the subject of modularity, Fairphone sells eight modules for repair product direct: display, battery, back cover, USB-C ports, speaker, microphone, rear and front cameras.

The starting price is 579 euro for the model with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage or 649 euro for the one with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage space. The deliveries will start on 25 October. Fairphone’s goal is to “change the entire electronics industry on issues of sustainability and human rights “.

Fairphone 4 involves zero electronic waste. “We go one step further to conserve the precious materials used in the production of electronic devices. When you buy a Fairphone 4, we either recycle responsibly or give an old phone a second life. This means that we compensate 100% for the material we put on the market. Nobody else does it in the smartphone sector, and it is our commitment that differentiates us from the others “, emphasizes the Dutch company.

The body of the phone is made in solid aluminum from certified manufacturers, while the back cover is made of 100% recycled plastic. “We are working on integrating fair cobalt and lithium into our batteries, and we are the only smartphone manufacturer using Fairtrade Gold in our supply chain,” Fairphone points out. The product is accompanied by the certification IP54 (resistance to dust and water) and this, according to the company, was possible by making a renunciation, that of the 3.5 mm jack.

Compared to the past the Fairphone 4 is a product with higher-end features which boasts a screen from 6.3 inch FHD + (1080 x 2340 pixels) protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 5. On board there is a SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G octa-core, while depending on the version the combination of RAM and storage is 6 GB / 128 GB and 8 GB / 256 GB. Connectivity is complete with 5G dual SIM, WiFi dual band, Bluetooth 5.1 LE, NFC e USB-C. Not missing a fingerprint sensor.

The sector of cameras provides a part front with a sensor from 25 megapixel (f / 2.2, HDR) and one rear with two 48-megapixel solutions (f / 1.6 for the main and f / 2.2 with FOV 120 ° for the ultrawide). The main rear camera has optical image stabilization and can record up to 4K / 30fps. The obviously removable battery is from 3905 mAh.
