Microsoft has confirmed that the new Surface Duo 2, announced during a virtual hardware event a few days ago, receive three years of software updates. Like its predecessor, the smartphone makes use of Google’s Android operating system, however the first Surface Duo – which is also expected to get 3 years of support – is still waiting for Android 11. But there are also news for the original model.
As reported by TheVerge, in fact, Microsoft has confirmed that Android 11 will arrive later this year on the original Surface Duo. The update was expected for this summer, but no information had been leaked to date. A company spokesperson said the team is “working to bring Android 11 to Surface Duo owners by the end of this year”. However, it should be noted that Android 12 should be publicly released for Pixel devices on October 4th, and by the end of the year we could see the first Android smartphones updated with the latest release.
Surface Duo 2 with 3 years of updates, the original model will receive Android 11 by the end of 2021
It is likely that Microsoft’s delays with the Surface Duo updates are due to the difficulty of adapting the new green robot within the dual-screen interface. It must be acknowledged that Microsoft’s approach to the Android world has been very ambitious, however the original model remained with many of its youth flaws and the delay with the release of Android 11 for the Surface Duo does not bode well.
One wonders, in fact, when Surface Duo 2 will receive Android 12, since its debut will have “still” Android 11. The confirmation of 3 years of updates on Surface Duo 2 arrived through Android Authority, to which a Microsoft spokesperson said: “We are committed to providing three years of operating system and security updates”.
Surface Duo 2 arrived last September 22, along with several products of the Surface family. These include Surface Pro 8, Surface Laptop Studio and Surface Go 3, all with Windows 11.
