Thanks to the recent ruling in the Apple vs Epic Games case, interesting information has emerged regarding the influence of the Cupertino house in the videogames sector, which according to its internal estimates in 2020 held well the 28.2% of the global gaming market.
As we learn in the long video analysis of the lawsuit carried out by the YouTube channel Hoeg Law, the court to verify the monopoly allegations by the Fortnite house analyzed the market shares of Apple, both in terms of videogame in general, and more in the specific to the mobile segment.
Using Apple’s internal documents as a basis, the court says the Cupertino company held 57.1% of the global mobile gaming industry in 2017. The figure was extrapolated by taking into consideration the 24% share estimated by Apple for the general videogame market, dividing it by 42%, or the portion of the mobile sector estimated by the company compared to the general one.
Using the same methodology, the court also calculated Apple’s market share in the mobile gaming market and the general one in subsequent years. According to internal estimates, Apple in the 2020 it held 28.2% of the global gaming market and therefore, according to the court’s estimates, 57.6% of the mobile gaming sector. However, it must be said that the mobile gaming estimates do not take into account the Nintendo Switch. Another interesting fact is that in 2015 Apple held 15% of the share of the global gaming market, which denotes massive growth in the following years.
As for the result of the Apple vs Epic Games lawsuit, as we have already explained it was only a partial victory for the Fortnite house, which however decided not to bring its battle royale back to the App Store.
