THE LEGEND CONTINUES (BUT NOT IN EUROPE) – The house of the Pleiades has removed the veils from the fifth generation of the Subaru WRX, the sports sedan that has its roots in the legendary racing Impreza protagonists of the great international rallies between the 1990s and 2000s. This is not the WRX STI, whose previous generation arrived in Europe, but the less extreme version that also previously it was denied to our markets. It will not arrive in the Old Continent, but in the United States it will be available from the beginning of 2022. On the other side of the ocean, few will probably choose to unload the 270 CV delivered by the 4-cylinder boxer 2.4 turbo engine through the classic six-speed manual gearbox: for this reason the Japanese company has provided the new Subaru Performance Transmission, an 8-speed automatic transmission, which can also be managed directly by the driver by operating the paddles on the steering wheel, which promises 30% faster gear changes in the second-third shift and as much as 50% when switching from higher to lower gear.
MORE RIGID AND SAFE – But the automatic transmission is not the only big news of the Subaru WRX just unveiled, which uses the Subaru Global Platform, an architecture that has allowed the engineers of the Japanese company to lower the center of gravity of the car, increasing stability and also reducing noise and vibrations. The new body is also more resistant: the torsional stiffness, compared to the previous generation model, it has increased overall by 28%, but it is 75% higher in the suspension attachment points, equipped with new geometries designed to improve road holding and new electronically adjustable shock absorbers – such as the electric control with double pinion transmission, for a total of 430 different combinations. Three, however, the driving mode selectable: Comfort, Normal and Sport. Finally, an important contribution in terms of stiffness comes from the new rear stabilizer bar: mounted directly on the bodywork, and no longer in the lower part of the chassis, it decreases body roll when cornering, ensuring flatter and safer cornering behavior.
GLUED TO THE ROAD – To keep the exuberance of the engine at bay Subaru WRX, increased in displacement and more responsive thanks to the new electronically controlled westgate turbine, the Subaru designers worked hard on aerodynamics, suggesting to the designers a whole series of solutions aimed at increasing downforce. A few examples? A small set of slots has been created in the rear part of the plastic tailpipes of the front fenders, made of aluminum and 2.3 kg lighter than the iron equivalents, to facilitate the exit of the vortex of air that is created with the rolling of the tires. Even the underbody, with a specific design of the panels that protect the mechanical parts, has been designed to increase the ground effect.
SUV STYLE PLASTIC PROFILES – Confirmed compared to the previous generation of the Subaru WRX, the absence of a conspicuous rear wing spoiler (which was instead present on the more powerful WRX STI). The spoiler, just mentioned, is integrated in the final part of the tail, where the large air extractor stands out, incorporated in the bumper, from whose sides two pairs of tailpipes protrude. More traditional, net of rather elaborately designed headlights, the front, whose most pronounced note of aggressiveness is given by the large air intake on the hood. The profile of the car is taut and dynamic, marked, in the rear part of the side, by very clear lines that help to enhance the musculature of the surfaces. The black plastic profiles in the lower part of the car, inspired by those of the SUVs, which clash clearly on this model. In short, the racing effect is guaranteed and, numbers in hand, the new WRX should not make us regret the model it is about to replace, quite the contrary. Too bad that, in Europe, lovers of the genre will not be able to drive it. Unless you have one sent from the States …
