After a brilliant start to the season, embellished by the achievements of the UAE Tour and the Tirreno-Adriatico, Tadej Pogačar turns his attention toReturn to Basque Country (April 5-10).
The Slovenian rider will be at the start of the Basque race for the second time in his career, having won the youth classification and obtained the 6th place in the general classification in the 2019 edition. It is a race suited to the potential of the UAE Team champion. Emirates, who will aim to wear his first ‘Txapela’, or the ‘beret’ (intended as a hat) intended for the winner of the race.
Pogačar: “I have good feelings, after having breathed a bit at the end of the Tirreno-Adriatico and having dedicated time to some tests in the wind tunnel and to some appointments with the media and sponsors. Returning to the Basque Country excites me: I raced the Itzulia two years ago and I felt all the enormous passion of the fans for cycling. The race will be very tough and the level of the participants as always high, but I really hope to be in the front row fighting to win the ‘Txapela’”.
As an appetizer of the Itzulia Basque Country, UAE Team Emirates will participate in the GP Miguel Indurain (April 3), an important appointment especially for Diego Ulissi, who will be able to make his long-awaited return to competitions after the forced rest period necessary to carry out cardiac tests. The Italian rider has returned to training at full speed and has now received the green light to compete.
Ulysses: “It has not been easy months, but now I am delighted to be able to announce that I am finally going back to racing. I have trained well and my form seems to be good, although obviously it is difficult to get an accurate picture of the condition until you are in the race. However, I am confident of being able to face the Indurain GP with good legs: at this moment, returning to racing seems to me already a success”.
Training forReturn to Basque Country will be led by team manager Joxean Matxin Fernandez (Spa) and sports directors Andrej Hauptman (Slo) and Aurelio Corral (Spa) and will include: Valerio Conti (Ita), Marc Hirschi (Sui), Rafal Majka (Pol), Brandon McNulty ( USA), Tadej Pogačar (Slo), Jan Polanc (Slo) and Diego Ulissi (Ita).
Sporting director Aurelio Corral (Spa) will be in charge of leading UAE Team Emirates in the GP Miguel Indurain with the following cyclists: Camilo Ardila (Col), Valerio Conti (Ita), Yousif Mirza (UAE), Sebastian Molano (Col), Cristian Muñoz (Col), Jan Polanc (Slo) and Diego Ulissi (Ita).
