Big surprise to Miami! Hubert Hurkacz looked like he was going to pack his bags at the start of the second set, but made a sensational comeback and took advantage of missed opportunities by Stefanos Tsitsipas to secure his first career semifinal in a Masters 1000. The Pole, number 37 in the world ranking, performed a real miracle in a game that had some moments of tension and even a penalty point for Tsitsipas.

Hurkacz beat ATP number 5 with a score of 2-6, 6-3 6-4, after falling 6-2, 2-0 and 15-40, and was serving. Tsitsipas was playing a near-perfect match up to that point, and then got two more break points at 3-3. It was then, however, that things changed forever and Hurkacz leveled up and never looked back.

The start of the third set was marred by a dispute between the Greek and referee Greg Allensworth. Tsitsipas was taking some time to start the third set and immediately left a warning. “If you give me a time violation, I want the supervisor on the court,” he said. The response was quick. “Time violation, Tsitsipas. Field Supervisor Please and Penalty Point, ”said the referee. The Hellenic was still in the game until 2-2, he suffered the break, he had the opportunity to make the counter-break in the next game but did not take advantage and ended up losing the game.

For Hurkacz, it’s a dream week, as he had only been in the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 on one occasion, in Indian Wells, in 2019, losing to Roger Federer. Now, already in the semifinal, awaits the duel between Andrey Rublev and Sebastian Korda, who play the last game of the ‘quarters’ tonight.
