CEFALU ‘(PALERMO) (ITALPRESS) – The partnership between the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Polyclinic Foundation of Rome and the Giglio Foundation of Cefalù is underway, with the aim of further qualifying the healthcare offer of the Sicilian hospital also in view of the ” development of a center of excellence in the field of research and higher education with a prevalent oncological orientation “. The “Gemelli Giglio medical partnership” project – presented today in the presence, among others, of the president of the Sicilian Region, Nello
Musumeci, the president of Ars Gianfranco Miccichè and the regional councilor for health, Ruggero Razza – provides for the implementation of biomedical, experimental and clinical research programs, training programs and know-how transfer, the enhancement of internal resources and , in a more long-term perspective, the start of the process for the recognition of IRCCS (Institute of Hospitalization and Scientific Care) for Giglio. And, moreover, the possibility of activating academic courses in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. The health activity of the “Gemelli Giglio Medical Partnership” has been organized for treatment centers.
The first to leave will be the Endocrine Diseases and Obesity Center, the Pancreas and Colorectal Surgery Center, Laparoscopy and Robotics and the Liver and Biliary Tract Surgery Center. In October it will be the turn of the Gynecological Oncology Center and the Center for the treatment of endometriosis to continue, within a year, with the start of all the activities in the project. These include the Center for the Treatment of Thyroid Cancers, the Center for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Endometrial Neoplasms and the Integrated Center for Robotic Surgery.
The schedule foresees the start of the outpatient activities of the first three Centers by June and the surgical activity, with the first admissions, in September. The project is governed by a ten-year agreement which provides for the inpatient treatment of 18,805 patients (from 729 in the first year to 2,068 in the tenth year).
The managers of the first three treatment centers have already been identified and defined. For the Center for Endocrine Diseases and Obesity Professor Marco Raffaelli, director of the complex operating unit of Endocrine and Metabolic Surgery of the Agostino Gemelli IRCCS University Hospital Foundation. With Raffaelli, the endocrinology and metabolism specialist Mia Lovicu and the endocrine and obesity surgeon Luca Sessa will arrive from the Gemelli Hospital. The Pancreas and Colorectal Surgery Center was directed by Professor Sergio Alfieri, director of the complex operating unit of digestive and pancreatic surgery and Coordinator of the Gemell Pancreas Surgical Center. The Liver and Biliary Tract Surgery Center is directed by Professor Felice Giuliante, director of the Gemelli Biliary Surgery Complex Operative Unit. The Gemelli professionals will integrate with those of Giglio in taking charge and care of the patient and will be an opportunity for the transfer of skills and know-how from a highly specialized center in these types to the Sicilian hospital.
