The pills from the first of the Azzurri at Euro2020, from Chiellini’s records to those of Vittorio Pozzo that are approaching

Italy starts Euro2020 with a nice 3-0 over Turkey at the Olimpico. Here are 5 curiosities about the match that inaugurated not only Mancini’s blue tournament but the entire competition.

The national team continues its streak of matches without defeat: they have become 28, with the last knockout remaining that of 10 September 2018 in the Nations League against Portugal. It is the second longest streak in Italian history, behind only the 30 unbeaten matches established by Vittorio Pozzo’s Italy between 1935 and 1939 (four years in which he won Olympic gold in Berlin 1936 and the 1938 World Cup)

The one against Turkey is the 9th consecutive victory for Italy. They arrived scoring a total of 28 goals without conceding, with the blue clean sheet from 14 October 2020 and punched for the last time by the Dutch Van de Beek. Italy is one game away from matching its best streak without conceding goals: it reached 10 between November 1989 and June 1990. The record of successes in a row instead are the 11 set by Mancini’s Italy between November 20 2018 and November 18, 2019.

first time

It is the first time in history that Italy has scored 3 goals in a match in the final phase of the European Championship. For the Azzurri it is the 39th match in the competition.

Chiellini’s records

Race to remember for Giorgio Chiellini. He set foot on the field in the fourth European championship of his career, equaling Gigi Buffon and Ale Del Piero in first place in the ranking of blue participations. The Juventus defender also takes another record: at 36 years and 301 days he becomes the oldest Italian player ever to set foot on the pitch in the final phase of the European and World Cups. The oldest blue ever regardless of the role remains Dino Zoff, who took the field at 41 years and 89 days on May 29, 1983.

cyrus scorer

That of 2-0 against Turkey is the goal number 14 in the national team for Ciro Immobile: he reaches Mario Balotelli at the top of the ranking of active players. The absolute record remains that of Gigi Riva, 35.
