Interview with Antonio Conte: “Italy, that’s why you have to believe in the European Championship”

The former coach speaks on the eve of the European Championship: “Mancini has managed to create a convinced, enthusiastic, cohesive group. A team that believes in it and gives everything. It’s not easy.”

After his farewell to Inter, Antonio Conte talks to the Gazzetta dello Sport: from the Nerazzurri scudetto to the prospects of Italy in view of the European Championship. Here is an excerpt

How do you judge our national team and see some similarities with yours?
“When you start in such an important competition there is always a fair amount of enthusiasm. Around this national team there is even more than mine thanks to the 27 consecutive results and the many excellent performances. There is self-esteem, confidence and we start with the wind in our sails “.

But could this very long streak of results have created an excess of expectations?
“I would take the positive aspect of these 27 positive results: the confidence in one’s own means, the awareness of being good and being able to play with everyone”.

How do you judge Mancini’s work?
“Roberto is doing a great job, not only the results say it: he has managed to create a convinced, enthusiastic, cohesive group. A collective that believes in it and gives everything. It’s not easy”.

We certainly have an excellent team, some opponents have a few more stars.
“Talk to a coach who has always focused on the group and sets his creed on the collective. Victories always come as a team. It is the group that enhances individuality and talent. With the champion alone you do not win. Unless you call it. Pele or Maradona, but those were extraterrestrials “.

Is there any blue individuality you feel like betting on?
“There are individuals with important qualities. But I repeat the previous concept: if the collective works then talent is exalted. Insigne’s ability to jump the man, the tears of Chiesa and Berardi, the insertions of Barella, the strength of central Bonucci and Chiellini who remain a guarantee, the reactivity and athletic overwhelming power of Donnarumma, one of the three best goalkeepers in the world “.

A message for the Azzurri?
“Let’s join together in cohort, let’s be ready to die, Italy called”.
