Up to two thirds of the individual construction and cleaning firms in Milan are foreign. This was stated in the report presented on Wednesday 9 June by the Research Office of the Unione Artigiani of Milan and Monza Brianza.
In particular, in the city there are almost two out of three individual foreign companies (63%) in the cleaning sector, while in the construction sector they are just over half (52%). The same trend can also be seen for food companies (47% foreign) and textiles (43%). On the other hand, the picture in the field of wood is different: non-Italian carpenters are only 27% of the total. Overall, one in three companies (31%) is led by foreigners.
In the space of a decade, companies led by non-Italian entrepreneurs have grown by 70%. Most of them are located between Milan city (46%), in the metropolitan area (39%) and only for 15% in Brianza. These are mainly Africans (41%), Europeans (31%), and Asians (15%). The Egyptians are very active in construction, cleaning and food, the Chinese in textiles, clothing and personal services.
“There are symbolic numbers that mark history. This overtaking of foreign companies on the world of Milanese construction and cleaning companies certifies a phenomenon that starts from afar and that today does not stop with the hands – comments Marco Accornero, secretary of Unione Artigiani Milan and Monza-Brianza -. Foreigners who do business here in Italy are perhaps even more courageous because they challenge a bureaucracy that is complicated to say the least, even for Italians who must return to love craftsmanship more “.
