He succeeds Antonio Messina, who will leave the leadership of Merck’s Healthcare business in Italy after 15 years

Merck announces the appointment of Jan Kirsten, currently Senior Vice President, Global Head of Business Franchise Fertility, as the new General Manager for Merck’s Healthcare business in Italy, starting July 1, 2021. In his new role, he will lead the business of strategic development of Merck’s business in Italy. Kirsten succeeds Antonio Messina, who will step down from running Merck’s Healthcare business in Italy after 15 years.
Since joining Merck KGaA in 2007, Jan Kirsten has held various roles of increasing responsibility, including Head of group strategy. In 2012 he then moved to Siemens. Rejoining Merck in 2014 as Global head of fertility technologies, he was later promoted to Senior Vice President, Global head of the business franchise fertility. Jan Kirsten’s career has seen him involved in large biotech and pharmaceutical companies as well as in important health-tech companies. In terms of training, he holds a PhD in Business Management, a Master in Business Research and a Master of Science in Molecular Biology.
