A personal visit to the natural monument of the lake of the former Snia, which will be scheduled in the next few days, to see with one’s own eyes “the desert created where there was a forest” left by two months of bulldozer work that have now removed almost all the vegetation present inside the private part of the former industrial area. And “intensified” actions to stop operations and arrive at the protection and expropriation of the whole area. These are the commitments that the mayor Virginia Raggi made on Saturday morning in the Piazza del Campidoglio meeting residents and activists who have been fighting for years to defend the ecosystem of Lake Bullicante.
On the occasion of the World Environment Day and in protest against the “wild cuts”, in fact, dozens of people dressed in the leaves of the trees left on the ground and marched on foot and by bicycle from the lake, to the Prenestino district, up to the Piazza del Campidoglio. “We came here to defend the entire area: we ask the mayor for a commitment to expropriation and an act of suspension of the works, which have transformed a forest into a desert”, the words of Sabrina Baldacci, of the Permanent Territorial Forum of the Energy park. The mayor was given thousands of signatures in support of the expropriation and dozens of drawings and letters from school children in Pigneto and Tor Pignattara.
“The municipality is already working on the variant and on the expropriation,” replied the mayor Raggi. “Two actions that need a small piece to be activated: the enlargement of the perimeter of the natural monument by the Region. To achieve the objective, we are committed to intensifying the actions carried out to date ”. Greater commitment also to get to stop the bulldozers, even if the mayor has made it clear that the municipality cannot do it alone: “The mayor is not the absolute leader. We are trying to work with the other institutions so that the works are blocked. We have already spoken with the prefect who immediately involved the minister (of the ecological transition, ed) who involved Ispra. The attention is maximum and we will do even more ”.
Also present was the city planning councilor, Luca Montuori: “We have already created a working group to arrive at the urban planning variant with the constraint of expropriation”. As for the stop to the bulldozers, requested several times by the citizens in the square, Montuori said: “We have exposed ourselves a lot, denouncing that the construction activities in progress do not have the necessary permits and this will be verified by the judicial authority. We have also started reporting to the prefecture for environmental damage and we hear from the Superintendency on a daily basis ”.
The meeting in the Campidoglio with the mayor Raggi and the councilor Montuori, who was also attended by the president of the V municipality, Giovanni Boccuzzi and the president of the Capitoline Culture Commission, Eleonora Guadagno, was the last stage of a long procession that started shortly after ten in the morning from the natural monument of the Bullicante lake. Adults and children, on foot or by bicycle, dressed in tree branches, have formed a forest on their way to the city center. The first stop is the Toti school in Pigneto, the second is the Di Donato dell’Esquilino school, and then descends between sidewalks and parks to the Colosseum. From there, the ‘forest’ walked along via dei Fori Imperiali and then went up to the Capitol.
“The inhabitants of the area are well aware that the environmental heritage of the former Snia must be safeguarded, they have been doing so for more than twenty years by protecting the lake from continuous speculative threats, for the health and well-being of the community. But today it is the entire city, faced with the urgency of the fight against climate change in progress, that cannot afford to give it up, letting a private individual destroy an ecosystem that is protected and necessary for public health and the environment ”. The mayor Raggi, in addition to the signatures for the expropriation and dozens of children’s drawings, were given three jars: one with the “clean” water of the lake, another with the “earth” of the natural monument, the soil that has allowed the vegetation to grow back in place of the yard, and finally the honey of the bees of Lake Bullicante. “They are the symbols of an urban ecosystem to be saved. A place where Rome can start making an ecological choice if it wants to respond to the climate emergency “. Objective: “An urban forest immersed in an archaeological landscape, with a lake in the heart”.
