The year preceding the election of the new Head of State is traditionally complicated and of great political maneuvers. The announced alliance – for prudence now called “federation” – between the Lega and Forza Italia is the signal that the dances have opened, but we are only at the first round of the waltz. Others will follow and it is safe to bet that the day after the proclamation of the new President the couples on the track will not be the same as at the start. At the last round, seven years ago, a Silvio Berlusconi, albeit already in political and judicial difficulties, had spared the quirinal games by choosing Matteo Renzi as a partner – at the time at the height of his splendor -.
Thus was born the unprecedented pact of the Nazarene between the Democratic Party and Forza Italia, then shipwrecked just the evening before the election of Mattarella, a name that Renzi extracted in extremis from the hat to free himself from the embrace of the Knight, who was aiming at Amato. Today the first couple of big voters to put their cards on the table is that Berlusconi-Salvini, more unusual couple than it may seem at first sight (after all, the two are allies in the center-right coalition but until yesterday they had barely endured each other). In Forza Italia there are those who fear that this is the prologue to a merger by incorporation, that is, the birth of a new super single party led by Salvini.
In my opinion, fears are not unfounded only on condition that the duo reaches the primary objective, that is to bring Berlusconi to the Quirinale and the Lega in the Europe that matters, the great family of the Popular Giorgia Meloni to the role of minority member of the coalition) and therefore Salvini legitimized undo mani to govern Italy. We are talking about an ambitious goal, as ambitious are the two protagonists who must however deal, among other things, with the not insignificant variable Draghi, a man who half the world would gladly see at the Quirinale, where he could open the season of a presidential republic of fact, that is, a system in which the Head of State matters much more in all fields than the Prime Minister. How it will end, no one can tell. What is certain is that Berlusconi and Salvini inaugurated the Holy Year of the Quirinale and today it is convenient for both of them to stay in the wake of Mario Draghi, which takes them by carriage to the finish line. But the sprint will be a whole other story.
