Europeans, Italy in group A: statistics and curiosities

Mancini’s national team relies on the quality of the midfield for a team that has rekindled enthusiasm and aims to win Group A

Mancini succeeded in a feat that many of his predecessors missed: to restore enthusiasm around the national team. And he did it not only with the results, unequivocal, but also by building a strong and precise identity together with the interpreters of his 4-3-3. The numbers speak for the coach: 10 out of 10 wins in the European qualifying round, victory in the Nations League one, 22 wins and 5 draws in the last 27 games played. The opponents of the group are affordable, but the Azzurri know – like few others – that even the simplest commitments can prove to be full of pitfalls. At least at the beginning, on the side of the national team there will be the audience of the Olimpico: the goal is to win the group and play it, openly with everyone, from the quarterfinals onwards.

The technical commissioner

Mancini’s challenge

Roberto Mancini, 56, has been with Azzurro since 2018. He took the national team after the failure of the failure to qualify for Russia 2018, and since then he has patiently built a group of young and experienced players, with well-established points. He has won 13 trophies as a player and as many as a coach, only one success with the national team is missing.

The star

Jorginho, from the Champions League to Italy

Jorginho, 29, quickly established himself as one of the best midfielders around. Brought to Chelsea by Sarri, after the initial skepticism of the Blue people he remained a fixed point also with Lampard and Tuchel, and with the Londoners he won, as a starter, the 2019 Europa League and the Champions 2021. For Mancini it is immovable , and with Barella and Verratti forms one of the best departments of the tournament.

The surprise

Church, the season of maturity

Federico Chiesa, 23: continuing to do well after the transition from Fiorentina to Juve was not taken for granted, and instead the Genoa-born winger was among the best in the Bianconeri’s subdued season. He has shown he has the personality to establish himself on a great team. Now it’s up to confirm himself in Azzurro.
