“On the occasion of World Environment Day we announce that the city of Rome will be part of the 10th World Water Forum 2024. The Romans built numerous aqueducts to bring water from distant sources to their cities, providing spas, latrines, fountains and private homes. Wastewater was eliminated with complex sewage systems and discharged into nearby waterways, keeping cities clean and free of effluents. Some aqueducts supplied water for the extraction operations or for the grinding of the grain. Aqueducts moved water only by gravity, being built with a slight downward slope within conduits of stone, brick or concrete. Most were underground, or sometimes they were tunnels. Therefore the Romans were the architects of great works to enhance the water resource.
Where there were valleys or plains, the conduit was supported by arched works, or its contents were pressurized in lead, ceramic or stone pipes. Most of the aqueduct systems included sedimentation tanks, gates and distribution tanks to regulate supply as needed ”.
He announced it a little while ago Endro Martini, geologist, President of Italy Water Forum 2024. The announcement comes just at the same time the world remembers World Environment Day!
“In the third century AD, the city had eleven aqueducts, which supported a population of over one million people. A system of aqueducts that practically managed to cover the entire city and also the public baths. In Rome at the time there were also public baths. The model was exported to cities throughout the Roman Empire and the implementation of such systems was funded as works of public interest and civic pride. Expensive but necessary works to which everyone could and should aspire. Most Roman aqueducts have proven to be reliable and durable, some have survived into the early modern age and some are still partially in use. Should Italy be the seat of the Tenth World Water Forum – Martini continued – the aqueducts of Rome, the fountains of which the city is rich, the innovative models introduced by the Romans but all of Ancient Rome and even that of today will be part of the Forum, the most important event on the planet. It will be an inclusive Forum, open to positions and dialogue with the representatives of the Counter – Forum because the water resource must not divide but must unite. We will have representatives of all the religions of the world who for the first time will sit around a table with Heads of State, Ministers of the Environment, delegations of associations, to arrive at the “Water Renaissance” charter. It is an unprecedented event, a forum of rupture, from a Recovery Fund perspective ”.
The systems invented by the Romans, maintenance, beautiful fountains: Rome is part of the Tenth World Water Forum – Italy Water Forum 2024!
“The maintenance methods of construction of the aqueducts are indicated by Vitruvius. in his work De architectura (1st century BC). The fountains of Rome show how the Romans have always had a great passion for public waters, from aqueducts to spas and how, after centuries of decline, this passion was expressed in the construction of the numerous fountains (over 2,000) that still decorate the streets today and Roman squares. The problems of hygiene, then, did not seem to worry anyone, if the water of the river (decanted in special cisterns) was considered so good that the popes took it even while traveling. The fountains were, for the Romans, almost a natural consequence of the geological conformation of the land on which the city was built: the volcanic soil in the hills – concluded Martini – and alluvial in the plain (completely permeable) superimposed on a clayey layer (impermeable) that the numerous natural water veins of which the area was rich flowed at a minimum depth, producing, when they could not flow into the Tiber, numerous spontaneous springs scattered here and there at the foot or halfway up the hills, resulting in streams of water Until the imperial era, responsible for the cura aquarum (aqueducts, fountains, spas, etc.) was the censor, i.e. the competent public works magistrate , usually supported by a curule builder who was instead responsible, more generally, for the state property, and by the quaestors, who took care of the economic aspect, from the financing for the construction of the work (when, obviously it was a work public) to maintenance costs and workers’ wages.
