Quarrata (Pistoia), 4 June 2021 – He was part of the technical escort following the Under 23 cycling tour of Italy, left just yesterday. But Sauro Coppini, 68, from Quarrata, did not take part in the first stage from Cesenatico to Riccione due to a problem with his bike. In the evening, around 7.30 pm returning from home, and where he had gone in the morning to fix his Suzuki, he was the victim of an accident that gave him no escape. A terrible crash into a car with two young people on board, near the town of Tantlon, in the province of Ravenna. The impact was devastating, so violent that the body of the centaur is carambulated about ten meters from the bike, reduced to a thousand pieces and which started a fire, so much so that the intervention of the firefighters was necessary.

The man probably died instantly and the prolonged resuscitation maneuvers of the doctors were of no use. At work, to reconstruct the dynamics of the crash, the agents of the local police of Cervia remained until late in the evening. Based on the first investigations, Coppini proceeded on the Via Salara in the direction of Cervia. At the height of a semi-curve for him to the right he crashed into a Mini Clubman traveling in the opposite direction, with a boy and a girl on board. Perhaps the origin of the tragedy could be an invasion of the opposite lane by the centaur himself, who was also an expert motorcyclist. It is not excluded that he may have been dazzled by the sun or betrayed by some other circumstance.

The 118 helicopter also got up from Ravenna, the doctors practiced for almost an hour

cardio pulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, but for the motorcyclist there was nothing more to be done and the doctor confirmed his death. Under shock, the two young people who were aboard the Mini, the girl was wearing a collar and was rescued by the staff of a second ambulance. The asphalt of the Via Salara, which remained closed due to the reliefs, was reduced to a carpet of glass and debris. Following the collision, the car crashed into the guardrail of the adjacent farm ‘Frutteto delle Saline’. A colleague of the escort of the young Giro d’Italia was passing by and was on his way to pick up another bike from the escort that had broken down. And so he stumbled upon the accident, by accident. Upset Luigi Lucchesi, head of the group of motorcyclists following the sporting event: “Sauro – he says – had not taken part in the first stage due to a problem with his bike, but would have started with today’s one. Last night he was returning to his hotel in Cesenatico, one of the group came across the accident by chance, shortly afterwards I also arrived. They did everything to save him, but there was nothing to be done “.

The colleague and friend can hardly hold back the tears. He remembers him speaking of “a wonderful person, who has dedicated his life to cycling. The ideal of what a sportsman can be. His loss for us is something serious, shocking. For me he was a brother, I had known him for almost 25 years and he was registered with Nuova Placci 2000, which organizes the Giro. A person always available to everyone, one of our columns, with us from the beginning “. Colleagues met in the evening, not everyone still knew about the tragedy. Today the second stage of the young Giro d’Italia is scheduled, from Riccione to Imola. “We are still stunned – Lucchesi said in the evening – we have not yet thought about how to remember him, but we will do something”. Sauro Coppini, a retired craftsman, leaves behind a wife and daughter.
