CAPRI – In Rome, Capri and New York, the international guests return to LE CONVERSAZIONI, the festival directed by Antonio Monda and Davide Azzolini which this year reaches its 16th edition.

For this year of resumption and reopening, the Desire / Desire theme will be the common thread of the meetings: craving and irrationality, sexual attraction, conquest of power and money, or, rather, the illusion of satisfaction? But also, in a positive sense, vital impulse, desire for knowledge and aspiration to the universal. Antonio Monda will share the different aspects with the guests of this new edition, which, after Rome, will arrive in Capri with the traditional meetings in Piazzetta Tragara and in Anacapri with the new appointments at Villa San Michele. The closing of the Festival will be as usual in December in New York.

The protagonists of LE CONVERSAZIONI 2021 will be: Chiara Valerio, Teresa Ciabatti, Maaza Mengiste, Margo Jefferson, Abigail Dean, Candice Carty-Williams, Paolo Giordano, Colm Toibin, Olivier Guez, Brian Selznick, AO Scott.

In ROME, the Festival opens again this year at Palazzo Merulana, a lively and dynamic center of cultural production between literature, cinema and art, in the heart of the capital (via Merulana 121 – 6.00 pm), born from the synergy between the Elena and Claudio Cerasi Foundation and CoopCulture: Wednesday 16 June Antonio Monda will talk with the writer, curator and translator Chiara Valerio and, on Wednesday 23 June the guest will be Teresa Ciabatti, nominated for the 2021 Strega Prize with her latest novel Seva Bellezza (Mondadori).

The international guests of this essential stage of the festival return to CAPRI, on the two weekends of 25, 26 and 27 June and 2, 3 and 4 July (7.00 pm). To the appointments in the setting of Piazzetta Tragara, two dates are added on 29 and 30 June (7.00 pm) in the fascinating Villa San Michele in Anacapri, thanks to the collaboration with the Villa San Michele Foundation.

The 16th edition of Capri will open on Friday 25 June, the Ethiopian naturalized American writer Maaza Mengiste, author of the book The Shadow King, just published in Italy for Einaudi, which evokes the tragedy of the fascist invasion and the heroic resistance of the Ethiopian people, where the gaze and female heroism.

Saturday 26 June will be hosted by Margo Jefferson, writer, collaborator of the New York Times, Pulitzer Prize for best critical journalism, author of the essay On Michael Jackson (66thand2nd) and of the book Negrolandia (66thand2nd) awarded with the National Book Critics Circle Award as best biography.

Sunday 27 June will be the turn of Abigail Dean, a British lawyer and writer, an authentic revelation of English-speaking fiction with her debut novel The Girl A (Einaudi) already sold in 27 countries around the world and ready to become a TV series.

Over the course of the week, the Festival continues with meetings at Villa San Michele: on Tuesday 29 June the British journalist and writer Candice Carty-Williams, author of the brilliant novel Queenie (Einaudi), debut of the year at the British Book Awards, will be a guest. UK and finalist in the Women’s Prize For Fiction.

Wednesday 30 June, the protagonist will be Paolo Giordano, the only Italian guest of Le Conversazioni di Capri, collaborator of Corriere della Sera, Turin writer and physicist, who has always shown in his writings two souls, humanistic and scientific. Author of the great success The solitude of prime numbers (Mondadori), he recently published for Einaudi the essay Nel contagio, a reflection on Covid-19 and on the impact it has had on life and on the times that exist.

We will return to Piazzetta Tragara on Friday 2 July with the French writer and screenwriter Olivier Guez, journalist of Le Monde, New York Times, Le Point and author of numerous historical and social novels, mainly focused on the theme of world political balance; has published in Italy his novel The disappearance of Josef Mengele (Neri Pozza).

Saturday 3 July, conversation with the Irish writer and literary critic Colm Tóibín, winner of numerous prizes for his works of fiction and non-fiction (Encore Award, Man Booker Prize nomination, Costa Book Award); as a journalist he has worked for numerous Irish newspapers, above all in politics and literature, and among his latest publications the novels The Empty Family (Bompiani) and The House of Names (Einaudi).

The famous American illustrator and writer Brian Selznick, author of numerous successes such as The Extraordinary Invention of Hugo Cabret (Caldecott medal in 2008), The room of wonders and The Marvel treasure published in Italy by Mondadori.

Finally, the 2021 festival program will return to the United States in December, with the traditional closing conversation at the New York Historical Society which this year will host the journalist and cultural critic AO Scott.

Also for the 16th edition, on the occasion of the Capri events, the anthology that collects the unpublished texts of the protagonists on the theme Desiderio / Desire will be published and distributed to the public, which will be read by the authors themselves at the opening of each appointment.

Many are the names of protagonists of international culture who took part in the past editions of Le Conversazioni, which opened in 2006 and which currently has about 215 guests. 2020 saw the birth of the massive new digital project Writers on Writers, the 52-episode series featuring footage from 180 excellent guests. A great celebration of international literature by the most prestigious authors in the world, joined by architects, musicians, directors, actors and international performing artists: 2 Nobel Prizes, 5 Booker, 12 Pulitzer, 7 National Book Award, 13 Strega Prize, 27 Oscars, 4 Palme d’Or, 5 Tony, 2 Grammys, 1 Pritzker and 11 NBA titles.
