Bologna, 3 May 2021 – There is a lot of anticipation for the territories that will be touched by the Giro d’Italia 2021, which sees theEmilia Romagna, crossed in every province, protagonist of four important stages both from a sporting and cultural point of view. The 104th edition of the pink race which kicks off on Saturday May 8, therefore, sees the Corsa Rosa embrace the region and entrust it with the first arrival uphill with the Piacenza – Sestola stage on Tuesday 10 May. The next day the stage for sprinters from Modena to Cattolica, the longest leg Siena – Bagno di Romagna, remembering the great champion Gino Bartali and the unforgettable technical commissioner Alfredo Martini and then giving way to the maybe culturally stronger fraction, when from Ravenna we will leave for Verona in what is the great tribute of the Giro a Dante but also a Learco War, the first pink jersey in history.
The ideal passage of the bottle between the pink race and Emilia Romagna was presented today in videoconference in Bologna by the president of the Region, Stefano Bonaccini, together with the director of the Giro d’Italia, Mauro Vegni, and the coach of the Italian national cycling team and president of Apt Servizi Emilia-Romagna, Davide Cassani. Also present was the head of the political secretariat of the Presidency of the Regional Council, Giammaria Manghi, several connected auditors.
“These are very important stages because beyond the cycling aspects, they bring with them the cultural ones, from the hinterland to the sea – opened Vegni – The first stage is the 4th of the Giro calendar, going from Piacenza to Sestola, 187 km with an altitude difference of 2800 meters. It will be the first mountain stage of the Giro, with an uphill finish, the hamlet of the Matildic castles during which you pass by the birthplace of Vittorio Adorni, and through the Via Emilia you reach the Rossena castles continuing towards Sestola. There we go backwards to the final of 2016 when Ciccone won. This year, in fact, after Fanano we climb the Passerino pass, 4 km at 10% and sections at 14% “. The start will be at 12.20 and the arrival scheduled for 17: we touch Parma (13.32), Rossena (14.22), Carpineti (14.54), Montemolino (15.52), Montecreto (16.28), Fanano (16.44), Passerino pass (16.56) ).
The next day we go from Modena to Cattolica, a stage of 177 km with a difference in height of only 300 meters for a section dedicated to sprinters: take the Via Emilia to Rimini and then turn towards Cattolica. The start will be at 13.10 and the arrival scheduled for 17: we touch Bologna (14.06), Faenza (15.11), Cesena (15.56), Rimini (16.36), Misano (16.50) and Cattolica. Here we say goodbye to the Giro to find it in the Region on May 20th.
“Stage 12, from Siena to Bagno di Romagna it is the real Apennine stage of the Giro, moreover the longest part of the pink race, with a length of 212 km and an important difference in height of 3,700 meters but above all it has climbs and descents that intersect without a moment of rest – continued Vegni – After Siena you go through the Chianti area to get to Ponte a Ema remembering Gino Bartali. We then go to Sesto Fiorentino to remember the historic technical commissioner Alfredo Martini at the 100th anniversary of his birth. You climb the very hard Monte Morello with 18% gradients and through the Consumma, Passo della Calla and Passo del Carnaio you arrive in Bagno di Romagna. The arrival will be the same as in 2017 that saw Oscar Freire triumph but, unlike last time’s circuit, this time we will go directly to the finish line ”. The start will be at 11.20 and the arrival scheduled for 16.54: we touch Passo della Calla (15.46), Santa sofia (16.19), Passo del Carnaio (16.43) San Piero in Bagno (16.50)
The next day, stage 13 from Ravenna to Verona it will be for sprinters, with an altitude difference of just 200 meters and 198 km to go. “A stage that is however important for what it evokes, beyond the cycling aspect – concluded Vegni – is in fact the stage dedicated to Dante for the 700 years since his disappearance and we start from the city where the Supreme Poet is buried so much so that cyclists, to reach km zero, will pass by his tomb. Another important step is the finish in Bagnolo Po to remember another great cyclist, Learco War, who in addition to having made the Giro great, in 1931 was the first to wear the pink jersey which today turns 90. The arrival in Verona, on the other hand, will be in Corso Porta Nuova, already the scene of several editions of the World Cup. We therefore like to underline how through the design of these stages it is possible to give Emilia the possibility to combine the mountains with the sea with cycling and cultural routes ”. The start will be at 12.25 and the arrival scheduled for 17: we touch Argenta (13.19), Ferrara (14), Stienta (14.23), Bergantino (15), Bagnolo San Vito (15.47).
He then took the floor Davide Cassani, ct and president of the regional Apt. “Emilia is one of the few cases where it can be said that the Giro touches the whole region and does so with 2 simple and 2 very complicated stages – he said – the first uphill finish is tough: with Passerino hills with constant slopes, we will already understand who can win the Giro and there will be a great show. The stage of Bagno di Romagna is also complicated and we will see some good ones. The runners, in fact, will be tired because they arrive from the fraction of the dirt road of the day before and here, those who want to try to make a difference find themselves in front of a tough stage. Great beautiful fractions in the most beautiful race in the world “.
Particularly satisfied and proud, President of the Region, Stefano Bonaccini, who underlined the importance of having the Giro d’Italia and the visibility it allows to give to the territory. “The Region is made up of nine provinces and all of them will be crossed by the pink race – are the president’s words – Thanks to Vegni for the sensitivity they had towards Emilia because, in addition to very beautiful and very varied stages, it touches the whole via Emilia but also the territories of Ferrara and Ravenna in the year of Dante’s celebrations. The sensitivity of the Giro therefore touches territories, the hearts of the fans but also those who are not fans because it presents the many excellences and beauties of the country, an extraordinary opportunity because, with a region placed horizontally, we have the advantage of being crossed but also of remembering the many cyclists who were born here and who have written the history of cycling. In recent years we have also shown with the administrators that we are a region that looks good when it tries to organize and cycling for us is an added value that helps to make Emilia known. The memory of la is still alive in the eyes Bologna – San Luca of 2019 which showed the world the longest portico ever and for which we are awaiting UNESCO recognition. The combination of what you have and sport, through the Giro is an unmissable opportunity for us. I hope for a collaboration that will continue over the next few years “.
And inevitable, a hint of the pandemic situation. “An event also of hope because while we continue to manage the health emergency, thanks also to the vaccination campaign, which sees us among the regions that vaccinate the most, an acceleration that affects the whole country, we begin to look at the next few months with greater confidence, also if we must continue to comply with all safety measures, to continue to make progress and not have to go back – he concluded – Let us once again and strongly focus on sport to enhance the territory, as a driving force for growth and development. The Giro is also a signal that we want to give as a sign of the restart, which we will be ready to fully grasp “
Finally the word was passed to the mayor of Bagno di Romagna, Marco Baccino, who underlined the great showcase offered by the pink race: “In 2017 it was a great experience to welcome the stage in the 100 years of the Giro and a reason for pride, promotion but also from the social aspect, making our community more united and proud, collaborating in the welcome and in a fantastic day. We are gearing up to receive this international event and show our specificities ”. The mayor of Cattolica Mariano Gennari finally recalled that “the Giro had been missing since 1978, offering today an unmissable opportunity for which citizens are preparing for a great day of celebration and joy”.
I am 23 teams at the start including the Emilian Bardiani Csf and athletes from the region who, wearing the colors of the different teams, are ready to shine.
