Fabio Pedretti from Gardone Valtrompia, was facing a 27 km trail race when he was struck by cardiac arrest: he died shortly after in hospital
Fabio Pedretti, 24-year-old runner from Gardone Valtrompia, lost his life running, on his birthday, while participating in the seventh edition of ‘Uno by Monticelli, a trail race that traditionally takes place at night in Franciacorta on the first Saturday of December. The athlete who suddenly collapsed to the ground was 24 years old – apparently due to a cardiac arrest -, in the woods that frame the Gandovere stream.
First the help of his teammates, among whom there was also a cardiologist, and then the intervention of the medical staff, helped by other athletes to carry the backpacks with the equipment for the first treatments along the impervious path. Resuscitation maneuvers have been practiced for a long time. It seemed that the conditions of the young athlete enrolled in the New Atheltics Sulzano had stabilized, while remaining serious, and so the 24-year-old was transferred to the nearby San Rocco di Ome Clinic, where for his heart he stopped again, without giving him a chance. Yesterday’s early evening, from the sports field of Monticelli, 300 athletes had started, equipped with a special mandatory kit for competitions of this type and headlamps to illuminate the steps, even braving the cold, along the paths that enter the woods. A race of 27 and a half kilometers (five hours to finish it), much loved among runners, as exciting as it is adventurous and demanding, reserved for experts in this specialty of running. The tragedy deeply affected those who saw the young athlete caught by the fatal illness, after a couple of hours of competition, and who, then, passing by, witnessed the intervention of the rescuers.
