A strange place is where drug use is legalized and opinions start to be considered illegal. Freedom to take drugs but not freedom of expression? In this way, what a great poet like Baudelaire, opposed to the legalization of drugs, saw: they reduce us to subjects. The thing does not seem so strange if we put together some news of these days. On the one hand we are witnessing the invitations of an authoritative voice of the system, such as Mario Monti, to identify forms of legal denial of freedom of expression, and similar concerns also on these columns, and, on the other hand, the push of a part of the government to want to liberalize the use of soft drugs (with the support of a couple of “fashionable” priests, while many others – priests and laymen doing remedial work – are against, but unheard by the government conference). Coincidences?

To say that there is an excessive freedom of expression that uses the channels available to everyone today is at least hypocritical on the part of those who, as the often quoted Echo himself, did everything to ensure that the so-called “communication” was the center of interest of every institution, from business to universities. For whom did these communication goddess preachers work who paved the way for the overwhelming power of (oh!) Communication companies? After decades of this, what did people think they did as soon as they had tools to communicate (and get sucked into data)? Obviously they communicate. Wonderful and bullshit things, of course. Now, on the one hand, the police are being invoked for the bullshit dealers and, on the other, impunity for the drug dealers. Baudelaire said: “The drug harms freedom more than the lungs”. So what is bad for freedom (what drugs and opinions) defines who’s in charge? What’s the name of this thing? Dictatorship? Or is there a different name? Who cares about a people of subjects, smoked in the brain?
