On the fate of the former barracks in via Guido Reni, the president of the Foundation turns to Gualtieri: “The decision rests with the Capitol, we are ready to collaborate as partners”

«U
In October, almost 35,000 admissions and 45,000 tickets sold, hadn’t been seen since the inauguration, when the driving force was that of novelty ». Pre-pandemic levels? “No, better. Even in August, numbers doubled compared to the previous year. Results that are the result of work, not chance. And the percentage of Italians, especially Romans, has risen from about 50 to 70 percent. I feel I can say that the sentimental relationship between the museum and the city has been strengthened. We are finally finding ourselves … ».

Giovanna Melandri, president of the Maxxi Foundation since the end of 2012, beyond the results achieved, has in store for the “colossus” in via Guido Reni a series of operations which, in line with her guide, involve contemporary art but also beyond: «We are moving in many directions. Meanwhile, it is a general energy upgrade of the museum is underway, young, but born in pre-decarbonization era. Another novelty, theagreement between Maxxi and the production company Fremantle, an international leader in entertainment, TV series, films. With them we are realizing five masterclasses filmed in the museum spaces. Protagonists as many masters of Italian culture in the world: Letizia Battaglia, the pioneer of sustainable architecture Mario Cucinella, Piero Lissoni, Nicola Piovani, Michelangelo Pistoletto. Five episodes that will allow viewers to discover the secrets of the creative process thanks to the first-person story of the artists ».

An increasingly digital Maxxi? “During the lockdown we were closed but never turned off. AND we have brought a wealth of ideas online, with over 15 million views. Real Maxxi and virtual Maxxi are complementary. Whatever the future holds for us, this is an essential legacy. Collaboration with world-class excellence such as Fremantle (The brilliant friend, It was the hand of God, X Factor, The Young Pope among its products, ed) goes in this direction “.

L‘another novelty, Melandri anticipates, concerns a’area adjacent to the building designed by Zaha Hadid, not yet used: “A huge space that we will allocate to public green, with urban gardens and the involvement of artists, agronomists and landscape architects”. The relationship – “fundamental” the president defines – between artistic research, urban regeneration and science-technology, is one of his obsessions: «It is the future. We have a European race underway, we haven’t won it yet but we’re at a good point. The goal is to provide content with what we familiarly call the “hole” ». The other unused area, towards piazza dei Carracci? “Yup. We made up a consortium made up of many actors, including Sony, Innova Camere, the technological district of the universities of Lazio and Human Technopole. We plan to create a Digital Innovation Hub, a research, experimentation and training center, where the most qualified skills in the world of creativity work together with the scientific community. The new building should also house a contemporary restoration center ».

Over the years, the discussions between Maxxi, private individuals and institutions have been numerous. Not with the Municipality of Rome: «Since I’ve been here – sighs Melandri – I saw three mayors. No relationship. As if we didn’t exist. Now I am confident. Roberto Gualtieri was here on a visit on the day of electoral silence, just before being elected. He gave me a huge pleasure and I took the opportunity to talk to him about another project of ours, of which we would like to be a partner but which depends on the Capitol, that is ithe future of the former barracks in via Guido Reni“. So far there has been talk of a residential destination plus a Science Museum: “The Science Museum, for the portion intended for public purposes, I think it is a dated idea. I say this with frankness. Better to think of an innovation center with residences for artists, scientists, computer engineers, environmental experts. A place of co-planning, exchange, an interdisciplinary contemporary pole, which would represent an extraordinary attraction for the city. A project in line with the previous ones, and also with the Pnrr. In this case, however, we cannot proceed alone, the decision rests with the Capitoline administration. We, if they want, can make ourselves available as a partner. We are neighbors with ten years of experience and a fair amount of knowledge, ready to collaborate».
