The Milanese book and reading festival, BookCity Milano, is increasingly widespread and participated, which for the tenth edition returns in attendance (with some events still in streaming) and offers a program of over 1400 events in 260 from Wednesday 17 to Sunday 21 November different locations. This year’s theme, which is reflected in many meetings, is After: various insights on the pandemic, challenges of the future, civil society, the condition of women, new geopolitical visions, cultural and literary trends branch off from this theme, but also hobbies, cooking, sports, passions, music. The opening night returns this year to Dal Verme, Wednesday 17, at 20, with the title “Reattaching truth and reason”: opens the Franco-Lebanese writer Amin Maalouf, who receives the seal of the city from the Mayor Giuseppe Sala and tells the audience interviewed by Nuccio Order. The evening also offers a tribute to the author who opened the first BCM in 2012, Luis Sepúlveda, who died last year due to the covid, with a memory of the widow Carmen Yáñez and the publisher Achille Mauri; furthermore, the writer Paolo Giordano proposes a lectio on the theme of After.
Then, the review comes alive: the meetings, as always, take place in the classic centers of culture, Castle, museums, libraries, bookstores, but also in less canonical places, such as condominium libraries, cultural centers, associations, prisons and hospitals, at Stock Exchange or in theaters. This year the choice of events organized by 13 Milanese universities is also very wide, with the themes most linked to history, current events and politics. In addition to a number of meetings for schools, children also become protagonists in the section dedicated to them, with numerous events in which to listen to fairy tales, conduct activities, learn to cook or invent stories, but also deal with very topical issues such as the environment, the climate, the protection of the environment. Many memories and tributes to great cultural personalities: Dante, Carlo Porta, Elio Vittorini, Giorgio Strehler, Simone de Beauvoir, Irène Némirovsky and many others, with dedicated events. Worth mentioning is the evening in memory of the philosopher Salvatore Veca, Friday 19th at the Feltrinelli Foundation with Carlo Feltrinelli, Piergaetano Marchetti, David Bidussa and many others (8.30 pm). And the memory of Maria Grazia Cutuli, also on Friday 19th, to whom an entire afternoon is dedicated in the Buzzati Room (see article in these pages). Also in the Sala Buzzati is the celebration for the ten years of “la Lettura”, the cultural supplement of the Corriere (see article in these pages). The protagonists, as every year, are the new books and their authors: there are really many writers who intervene in the presence and tell their new book or participate in choral meetings on current events.
In this special we present a selection of the most interesting and important meetings of the event. A recommendation for readers: all events, accessible only with a green pass, must be booked; just consult the website (www.bookcitymilano.it) and select the event or character, to access the “book” button and follow the instructions indicated.
