The municipality of Milan has created a real manual for the redesign of the city’s public spaces. Here are the guidelines for the changes implemented and for the future ones.
MILAN IMITATES NEW YORK: redesigns the STREETS along the lines of the Big Apple
# The ideas for the new mobility of the Big Apple hypothesized by the New York magazine together with the Curbed website
To rethink the mobility of the Big Apple, make it less hostage to traffic and pollution and more liveable for pedestrians and cyclists, the New York magazine together with the Curbed website they speculated what they might be the best interventions to implement. A work carried out with a team of designers and planners with proposals to change the streets of New York, as Janette Sadik Khan, former city councilor for mobility and head of Bloomberg Associates with which she is transforming Milan, had already begun to do. One example above all is the application of urban planning tactics.
Returning to New York, the suggestions launched by this study imagine this type of ideal way: wide equipped pavements, trees and green areas, very few parking spaces other than loading and unloading areas (also for cargo bikes), cycle paths, public transport lines with safe and preferred stops, clearly visible pedestrian crossings and solutions, such as rain gardens , to manage rainwater and much more.
# The Milan public space planning manual
In Milan it has taken a step forward compared to New York thanks to the realization of truth public space design manual, titled “Public space. Design guidelines “, by the municipal offices, together with the Agency for Mobility, the Environment and the Territory (AMAT), National Association of City Transportation Officials (Nacto) and Bloomberg Associates.
This tool it will be a lot useful, from the point of view of the “City of 15 minutes”, for the complete and orderly transformation of mobility, for the use of public spaces and to give greater logic to street furniture. It will also serve to clarify some innovative interventions, already implemented or to be implemented, such as new cycle lanes, tactical urban planning solutions, management of bicycle parking, urban drainage systems and much more.
# The document is structured in five sections and contains the guidelines of the “new Milan”
