Covid, in Italy the rising contagion curve. Closures in sight? Brusaferro’s appeal: “Get vaccinated to avoid data worsening”

Curfew in the Netherlands, lockdown for the unvaccinated in Austria, restrictions in some European countries to limit infections are already a reality. And also there Germany, overwhelmed by infections, it must resort to the army to face the wave caused by Covid. And with this epidemiological picture in front of the eyes that the president of the Higher Institute of Health and spokesperson of the Technical Scientific Committee, Silvio Brusaferro, makes an appeal in an interview with Corriere della Sera to get vaccinated and respect individual and social behaviors to curb the rise of the contagion curve in Italy. Yesterday the positivity rate was still 1.6%. And the cases increase: “The doubling time is mainly determined by theRt, the index of transmissibility (how many subjects can infect an infected individual, ed). We are now at 1.24. Looking ahead, this value is slightly down to 1.11. The more we manage to keep ourselves around unity, the epidemic threshold, the less the cases will grow. The ideal is to bring it back to values below 1. It is an evolving picture, it is difficult to make estimates “.

“If you haven’t done it yet, accept the offer of the first dose and, if you have already done two, book for the third when it is recommended. The contagion curve is up sharply, the weekly incidence last Thursday was 78 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in the last 7 days, when we know that the threshold within which effective action can be taken to limit the outbreaks is 50 cases ”adds Brusaferro who explains how it is now“ difficult to predict ”any restrictions. “Other countries are adopting restrictions, but at the moment they have much higher numbers than ours,” he stresses. Those who have not been vaccinated should be reminded “that the circulation of the virus is currently sustained and that the population is not immunized besides risking to catch the infection in severe form it contributes to keep the hospitals under pressure and to favor the spread of Sars-CoV-2 “.

The benefit of the vaccine “is irrefutable. I hope that in the face of such overwhelming numbers, people who hesitate will grasp the importance of actively participating in the action to combat the pandemic ”. The activity of tampons, “which has grown significantly in recent weeks”, does not justify the net increase in infections in recent periods: “the recovery – explains Brusaferro – it is due to an intense concomitant circulation in Europe, is strongly supported by the unvaccinated and by a certain relaxation in individual behaviors. And I add the winter factor “. With regard to infections in schools, “there is a growth in cases in the school age groups as we have seen in the weekly data, but the same phenomenon is noticed between 30 and 50 years“. You can avoid going “towards a significant deterioration. Everyone must participate using prudence in their behavior and respecting the rules outdoors and especially indoors, given the season ”.
