Newborn suffocates, nursing student on vacation in Palermo saves him: It was a miracle

Alessandro Di Franco, 24-year-old Nursing Science student in Reggio Emilia, saved a two-month-old baby who was suffocating in a condominium in the Villaggio Santa Rosalia neighborhood in Palermo where he was on vacation. Alerted by the screams of the child’s mother and grandmother, the boy practiced the Heimlich maneuver and managed to unblock the baby’s airways.

It was a real miracle what happened yesterday in the neighborhood Santa Rosalia village a Palermo. A 24-year-old Nursing student who returned to Sicily on vacation from Reggio Emilia, where he attends the University, he found himself in the right place at the right time: he managed to save a newborn who was suffocating and that he could no longer breathe. The little one, just two months old, as some condominiums have told, was cyanotic and the mother and grandmother came out on the landing screaming and looking for help: “She is dying, she is dying, she is not breathing”, they shouted. Upstairs stood Alessandro Di Franco, who will complete her undergraduate degree to become a nurse next month. The young man did not lose courage, he took the child and practiced it Heimlich maneuver, the famous emergency procedure used in case of airway obstruction and which must be performed by a person trained in first aid techniques.

In this way the boy was able to unblock the baby’s airways, saving him. If they had waited for help, the ending probably would have been different. “It was a providential intervention, almost divine – said the condominiums – that young man was with his parents for a few days of vacation waiting to return to Regio Emilia to complete his studies. The child was not breathing. If he had called 911, probably even a few minutes of waiting could have been fatal. When we saw the baby breathe again, we were all really happy. They were moments of terror. There was the panic. Luckily Alessandro was able to handle the situation with the necessary coolness. For us, the graduation exam has already passed “.
