Italy in infringement for failure to transpose the agri-food directive – Europe

BRUSSELS – The European Commission has published the first report on the application of the directive against unfair commercial practices in the agri-food sector. Italy is among the eleven countries that have not yet transposed the directive by the deadline of May 2021, and, like other laggards such as Spain, is in infringement procedure.

The report only deals with countries that have transposed and applied the directive. The vast majority of these have adopted more stringent rules than those established by EU rules, identified administrative authorities for its application and set penalties for those who use unfair practices, such as delayed payments, last-minute cancellation of orders for perishable products, lack of clarity on the conditions of supply of products which then end up in promotion.
