The prize

The award was conceived and financed by the prince William and from Royal Foundation and will be awarded annually until 2030. It is divided into 5 categories and for each the payout is, in fact, one million pounds: Protect and restore nature, Clean the air, Repopulate the oceans, Building a world without waste, Restore the climate. Two positions occupied by Italy thanks to the city of Milan, in fact, with Building a world without waste and thanks to the company Enapter, which is based in the province of Pisa, with Restore the climate.

The prize awarded in Milan will be invested for enhance the Hubs already existing e create new ones with the aim of building a network that increasingly avoids waste. The project Food Waste Hub, born in 2017, was created thanks to the collaboration of the Municipality of Milan and the Milan Polytechnic. Thanks also to the involvement of Food bank 10 tons of food were saved each month they produced 260,000 for sure, thanks also to the contribution of canteens and supermarkets. Many other future projects are planned with the collaboration of large-scale distribution. In the project there is the idea of ​​replicating the same successful model also in the world ofOrtomercato to recover and ensure that even fresh food is not wasted. “Milan is the first major city to apply a policy against food waste at the city level that includes public bodies, food banks, charities, NGOs, universities and private companies. And it’s working – these are the words that explain the reason for the award – Today the city has three Food Waste Hubs, each of which recovers about 130 tons of food per year or 350 kg per day, equivalent to about 260,000 meals.“.
