Milan, in piazza Sant’Eustorgio the Night of the Homeless returns

Initiative to raise awareness on the issue of extreme poverty

Milan, Oct 16 (askanews) – The event that since 1999 tries to keep the attention of citizens, media and institutions high on the condition of those who do not have a home returns to Milan tonight. This is “La Notte sei Senza Dwelling”, an initiative scheduled in Piazza Sant’Eustorgio on the occasion of the World Day for the Fight against Poverty, October 17, established by the United Nations Organization in 1992. Organizations that deal with homelessness dwelling, coordinated by Insieme nelle Terre di Mezzo Onlus, propose an initiative to raise awareness among citizens on the theme of extreme poverty and social exclusion.

“With our structures and the Good Samaritan mobile unit – wrote Brother Clemente, Director of the works of the Brothers of San Francesco in a note – we are committed 365 days a year in the care of the homeless: for over twenty years our Foundation offers help to brothers in need. In recent years, inspired by the works of St. Francis of Assisi, we have distributed 12,315.00 meals. For over twenty years the Foundation has become a point of reference for the poor of Milan and offers help to brothers in need. We move forward despite the fatigue and obstacles that inevitably come along the way every day, but with great certainty: we are doing the right thing ”.

According to the associations organizing the initiative in Milan, in 2014 there was a decrease in the number of people on the street during the winter period for the first time since 2011, which went from 2,637 to 2,263 (of registered attendances). The identikit of the homeless Milanese who lived on the streets last winter is: man (87%), aged between 40 and 60 (51%), single (58%), foreigner (72%). Women are increasing, from 8 to 13%, separated fathers remain stable (15%).
