An important event that also represents the formalization of the start of the works of MilanoSesto – the largest urban regeneration project in Italy and among the main ones in Europe with an investment of 3.5 billion euros – in which, in addition to top management of the companies involved, the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, and the Mayor of the city, Roberto Di Stefano.
The works for the new station, which began in July of this year, will take two years and will be carried out by Cimolai SpA, which won a public tender last spring. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with Ottavio Di Blasi & Partners, the station will consist of a walkway 89 meters long by 18 wide, suspended above the existing railway line, which will have a “reunion” function, joining two parts of Sesto San Giovanni that have always been divided by the tracks, namely Piazza 1 ° Maggio and the former Falck areas. It will also be equipped with numerous services and commercial spaces of various kinds and will act as a panoramic observation point over the entire MilanoSesto project, which will transform an area of 1.5 million square meters, redesigning the urban layout of the entire city of Sesto San Giovanni and also helping to redefine the new boundaries of the metropolitan area of Milan.
With reference to the project, the MilanoSesto timeline foresees in a few months, at the beginning of 2022, the start of the construction site for the construction of the first private Union 0 lot, thanks to the investment of Hines equal to 500 million euros. The development of this first portion, with a gross surface area of approximately 250,000 square meters, including above ground and underground spaces, will see the construction of offices, areas for hospitality and neighborhood commercial activities, an innovative residential offer based on fees. accessible, ancillary services dedicated to the person and an intergenerational scheme declined in student housing for the youngest and multifamily for professionals and young families, in addition to the first portion of the park (13 hectares, part of the total 45 hectares of greenery). Right next to Unione 0, a pole of health excellence will rise, the City of Health and Research, which will host the new headquarters of the National Cancer Institute and the Carlo Besta Institute.
Roberto Di Stefano, mayor of Sesto San Giovanni, commented: “The laying of the first stone for the new bridge station is a symbolic moment that opens a new era of significant transformations with the redevelopment of the former Falck areas, the largest urban regeneration in Europe. , which comes alive. Finally, thanks to this modern infrastructure that will also be functional to the City of Health and Research, the two parts of the city that have always been divided by the railway will be connected to each other. Sesto San Giovanni is ready to project itself into a future dimension with an international flavor, driving the entire Metropolitan City and thus allowing it to keep pace with the major European metropolises. The overpass station is only the first fundamental step in an unprecedented redevelopment that will see the municipal administration as a major player in the present and in the immediate future “.
“With today – he commented Giuseppe Bonomi, CEO of Milanosesto SpA – we are beginning to see the first tangible signs of a work begun over two years ago with our partners Hines and Prelios, carried out thanks to the fundamental support of Intesa Sanpaolo and the fruitful collaboration with the Municipality of Sesto San Giovanni . Just around this important node of the transport network of the metropolitan area of Milan – he continued – in a few months we will see the rise on the one hand of the City of Health and Research, strongly desired by the Lombardy Region and, on the other, the first portion of what will be a real new city thanks to Hines’ private investment in what we call lot Unione 0. Overall, this is a great bet not only on Sesto San Giovanni, but also on the Milanese metropolitan area, finally also outside the walls of the Municipality of Milan. And it is – concluded Bonomi – also a very concrete way of contributing to the post-Covid recovery by building a piece of the collective future of this territory and of the country ”.
