“A collapsed piece of history“Says a resident of the Ostiense district. The Ponte dell’Industria, a Roma known by all as the Iron Bridge, was destroyed by flames in the night between Saturday and Sunday. At the moment the structure of the work is holding, but some external parts have collapsed. The fire, which broke out – this is the first hypothesis – from some huts under the bridge, was extinguished around one in the morning and spread through electric cables and pipes. There is not no injuries. Now the firefighters will have to return to the scene for one first static verification: then the works for the readjustment of the plants and the restoration of the collapsed parts, or the service tunnels, will follow. It will therefore take gods months before the ‘Iron Bridge’ can reopen, with heavy impact on the traffic of the Capital: the structure in fact connects the two districts Marconi and Ostiense. Also banned docks of the Tiber river and the cycle path in the section near the structure. The bridge is closed, the area is cordoned off and manned by the local police who are also involved in the area to facilitate traffic. Deviations have been prepared on neighboring streets, such as via Ostiense, viale Marconi, via Ettore Rolli.
“The inspections are not finished, then there will be static checks. A side walkway that carries the utility cables has collapsed ”explain the Municipality’s technicians. In the night the mayor arrived on the spot, Virginia Rays, and then the candidate of the center left Roberto Gualtieri. “It squeezes the heart to see a piece of history reduced in this way”, commented the first citizen, who this morning outside the polling station added: “Let’s wait the outcome from the investigations. I do not give up. I love Rome“. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rome is waiting for one first information from the police in relation to the fire. The magistrates will then proceed to the opening of an investigation file. According to the first reconstructions, the flames spread from some shacks located under the bridge, as had already happened in 2013, when the fire, however, had minor consequences. Before the brushwood, then the electric cables and some gas pipes then contributed to fuel the fire.
We now await the technical report of the fire brigade to get a more precise picture. “We’ve been here since two o’clock tonight. Eight hours of surveys. One fell side walkway which carries the power and water cables. Now the investigations on materials. The inspection is not finished ”, explain a Lapresse the technicians of the Infrastructure Development and Urban Maintenance Department of the Municipality of Rome. According to what is learned, the utilities instead they were re-powered already during the night. The society Areti he carried out the operations after many inhabitants of the area were left without electricity and gas. A spokesperson for Italgas informs that “from the checks carried out already in the early hours of the morning, the gas pipes that run along the iron bridge at Ostiense, promptly isolated by closing the valves upstream and downstream, they did not suffer damage from the fire nor did they feed it. The gas distribution service in the area continues regularly and has not suffered any interruptions. The low consumption of these hours allows for the moment to be able to do without the contribution of gas coming from closed pipelines ”.
“We heard a blast, the stink of burnt rubber and gas. The light went out immediately and we took to the street“, Tell the condominiums of a palace on the Ostiense bank. “We also heard cries for help coming from camps along the Tiber – says another – then we saw the flames. Slowly we saw the stake grow and wrap the bridge “. “The most impressive thing was the inability to act in front of a fire which spread – says a condominium – probably due to gas and electric cables. We have seen the fire grow more and more. A fire occurred a few meters from the academy of fire fighters and from the home of the divers “. While another inhabitant says: “It was a terrible evening, the flames were very high. I was afraid. Under the bridge there are gas pipes, the fear was that everything could blow up before they shut off the gas ”. And there are those who are now thinking about the repercussions on everyday life. “I used to pass over that bridge every day to go to work. Now we will stay that way for years. It will be a disaster for those who live here “.
