Municipal elections Rome 2021
It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, the latest alleged scandal that convinced the councilors of the Democratic Party to discourage their mayor, Ignazio Marino. Fifty euros worth of wine for a dinner with his wife paid, that was the charge, with the Capitol credit card. And now the waiter who brought the bottle to the table of the former mayor, Lorenzo D’Albergo points out in Repubblica, ran for Virginia Raggi.
The wine of scandal
At the center of the controversy ended a dinner consumed by the Taverna degli Amici, a restaurant in Piazza Morgana, paid for 120 euros by credit card. The owner of the restaurant told La Repubblica about a “bottle of wine costing 55 euros. It was a vintage Tunina Jermann”. Marino claimed to have dined with a representative of the World Health Organization, but the restaurateur denied this version: “He was with his wife”. The owner of the restaurant said at the time: “It is a white, an important wine. It is not among the most expensive of all, of course, but vintage Tunina is a good wine. Jermann then makes all excellent bottles. It is the penultimate in order. There is a bottle of 25, then 55 euros. And then the prices go up. When they told me that someone had ordered it, I immediately asked “who is this wine for?”. Then I thought “you have understand how the mayor is treated? “. I remember him as if it were today.”
Marino acquitted, one of his accusers candidate with Raggi
Marino, accused of embezzlement and forgery precisely for the incident of the receipts, was acquitted by the Court of Cassation because “the fact does not exist”. He was acquitted in the first instance and sentenced to two years on appeal. The subject of the trial was about fifty dinners paid for with the Capitoline administration’s credit card. Now one of his accusers, the waiter of the Taverna degli Amici, a restaurant now called Angelino, is a candidate for the town councilor on the civic list in support of Virginia Raggi. His name is Carmelo Ciraulo and thus explained to Repubblica the reason for his support for Raggi: “She often came to us for lunch. Like many mayors, because we are a stone’s throw from the Capitol. help her with a list in her favor. She has worked a lot in recent years, with the press always against. Never a blurb in favor, no one ever acknowledges anything. For me, however, she was very good. They asked me to help fill in the list too. in the District. Does Virginia know that I was Marino’s waiter? No, I don’t think so. “
