Greta thuberg e Roberto Cingolani on the same stage, in front of the audience of 400 young delegates of the Pre Cop26. The umpteenth hard attack on the inconclusiveness of the policy of the founder of Fridays for future came from the demonstration in Milan, a few minutes after the Italian Minister of Ecological Transition, who did the honors, had asked the young people that in addition to the “useful protests ”“ help to find new solutions ”. “Our leaders lack action and it’s intentional,” he said. “They pretend to have ambitions against climate change, but they open mines exploiting resources without increasing resources. They select young people like us pretending they listen to us, but it’s not true, they’re not listening to us ”. And again: “We have to find a trauma-free transition because there is no plan B or plan blabla. We hear from our leaders words, high-sounding words that have become nothing. Enough blablabla, we have been hearing chatter for 30 years and where are we? ”. An intervention, that of Greta Thunberg, which ended with the audience responding to her appeals in chorus: “What do we want? Climate Justice. When do we want it? Now”.
The first speech of the day was given to Minister Cingolani, who has already had numerous clashes with the Fridays for future: the last and most clear-cut was after he accused “the radical chic environmentalists” of being “worse” than climate emergency “. Today the minister began by asking for a concrete contribution from the young delegates: “We want to listen to your ideas, your proposals, your recommendations because we need your vision, your motivation and your involvement, ”he said. “Let’s join forces, we must not give up our future, the future of our planet. You intervened for this but please remember, and I tell you this as a scientist and a father of three children, that climate change and global social inequalities must be treated together ”. And he added: “There is no single solution. And I hope that in addition to protesting, which is extremely helpful, you will help us identify new visionary solutions. This is what we expect from you. After this premise I officially open the Youth4Climate. I wish you very successful extraordinary works ”concludes Cingolani.
Youth4Climate it will last three days, from Tuesday 28 September to Thursday 30. Four hundred young people, two from each of the 197 UN countries, will discuss all aspects of the climate crisis with experts. Italy will be represented by Federica Gasbarro e Daniele Guadagnolo. The Youth4Climate Thursday morning will overlap the Pre-Cop26, which will also start that day at the Mico in Milan. The 400 young people will present their proposals at the inauguration of the Pre-Cop, in the presence of Sergio Mattarella e Mario Draghi, and with the remote participation of Boris Johnson and Antonio Guterres. In the evening the Youth4Climate will end with the Music4Climate concert. The Pre-Cop26 will continue until Saturday 2 October, with the participation of about fifty environment ministers. They have to prepare the update of the decarbonisation commitments of the individual states under the Paris Agreement, commitments that will then be formally adopted in Glasgow.
